I hope that it is conducted with a sense of dignity to mourn the tragedy and the loss of a productive man in his prime. As opposed to being hijacked by activists for the bike agenda and the war on cars crowd.

they got their own thread. no need to junk this one up. does this work on sponsors like the terry fox run or m.s walk or is it just a ride for the sake of riding ?

I am ok with a memorial, but since this guy ran a red light, you can't really say there was any "disrespect" of cyclists involved. He made a mistake and paid the ultimate price. There is also no recognition of the fact that two drivers are probably terribly traumatized by this accident.

I have not seen any police evidence or credible news story that he ran a red light. Please let me know where you saw this. This ride is not to show disrespect for car drivers or anyone else sharing the road, it is simply to mourn the loss of a fellow cyclist. Two drivers may be "terribly traumatized", however how many others including children in his grade 2 class as well as his own children will also be traumatized by the loss of this man. That's a pretty insensitive and inconsiderate comment in my view.

The second driver whose path the cyclist was interviewd on the CBC news. He clearly said that the hit and run driver was proceeding on a green light and the cyclist was running a red.

Teh video has been disabled on the CBC news site but I personally saw it. The second driver seemed genuine, sincere and credible. Condolences on the loss of what seemed like a nice guy. You cyclists please be MORE careful out there. I almost killed a young girl tonight who rode out from a sidewalk of people at Spadina and Richmond tonight. It was a red light and she was in a hurry. I have a black vehicle and I doubt she saw me coming when she decided to run the red.
The video is still available

Thanks Mervyn, I hadn't seen it. There is no doubt cyclists need to obey the rules of the road, especially since they are more vulnerable. I live downtown and see some cyclists whizzing through stop signs , a recipe for disaster. By the same token I also see car drivers using the same roads like the Indy 500 and also do not come to a stop at stop signs. Toronto is so far behind a lot of major European cities when it comes to designing a safe infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers. I think the City needs to really take a closer look at this and do something constructive rather than just put in bike lanes then remove them all again at a whim and taxpayers expense.

Our friend Fuji made a valid comment once. Although it sounds counter-intuiative, sometimes following the rules can actually put a cyclist at greater risk. One example is making a left turn.

+1.

Where is the TERB like button???

I am not happy that someone died of course. But he was hit by a westbound car, then by an east bound car. By that alone it should tell you the cyclists ran the red.

I am sorry for the person's family, the kids he teaches. However the responsibility lies where it lies here.

Even if true, still not an excuse to kill the guy. How fast were the cars going? Were they within the speed limit? Were the drivers impaired? Did they make an attempt to slow down or avoid (or did they speed up)? (I actually slow down going through an intersection and try to avoid hitting people or things.)

Wow reaching really high now aren't you.

I am sorry but this guy got hit by 2 cars!!!!! Hello???? Does that not tell you something? Questioning if the drivers where impaired??? Was the cyclist impaired? How fast was he going? Did he slow down for the intersection, oh no we know the answer, he didn't even stop like he was suppose to.

Slow down in an intersection???? Wow, then how fast do you normally drive that you have to hit the brakes for an intersection? I drive the speed limit as posted. I get a green light. I go through. That is why I have the right of way.

You think these 2 drivers wanted to kill the guy???? And I am sorry but it is a very valid excuse as to WHY THE CYCLIST DIED. No body KILLED anybody. A guy on a bike ran a red and died. If anyone is guilty of killing it is the cyclist who killed himself. If I play with a loaded gun while the barrel is pointed at me, please feel free to call me an idiot when I blow my head off.

I know we love to dump on cyclists here but cars actually kill more pedestrians and other motorists than cyclists. Cars don't kill people, people kill people.

You are right. People kill people, but I think this cyclist was at fault here.

How am I dumping on cyclist????

This guy killed himself. Just like if he walked out into traffic on the 401.

People kill people. Again, if I handle a firearm unsafely and kill myself, is that the gun shops fault for selling me the gun?

How it is the fault of the drivers because the cyclist road out into traffic?
