Cayo Largo is a small island, not sure how much you can see. Some resorts are too small to have scooters, may not even have bikes.

Tip in CUC for sure, leave your maid 1 CUC on the pillow.

Ya, tax included. I've decided to spend a bit more for a basic place in Varadero. That way there are more options when it comes to sightseeing and nightlife, and it's not too far from Havana if I want to explore some working girls.
You're right, Cayo Largo is very small and according to satellite view on Google Maps there ain't a whole lot there.

Varadero with many resorts in the same area seems like a better option for what you want. You can search and locate your resort here http://www.cubaroutes.com/

The better resorts will have a snack bar with decent food, room fridge stocked with water especially if you tip the maid, scooters, bikes, nice beach, better food. A better smaller resort, 200-400 room, might be more comfortable during low season, as it will not seem so empty. Some resorts charge a single supplement, and others don’t.

The low end resorts in Cuba are not far in look and feel from the motels on Dundas, except could be in the middle of nowhere.

Make sure u check out Old Havana for the culture. U could easily pick up a freelancer there even during daylight hrs, they will know a place u can go for a short time.
