Folks,

Is there a way we can get an Unofficial Android Tips/Tricks thread going?

I must admit that Terb probably isn't the best place to start such a thread, but I figured it would be nice to have one to assist with new and existing Android users.

I'll start this off by adding a couple of my favourite apps.

1) AirDroid - Allows you to access your android device AND files remotely as long as you are on the same wireless network.

2) Call Control - Block unwanted calls/texts.

3) Lookout Security - Antivirus / anti-malware app for your precious phone. Also has location services in the event of a stolen or misplaced device.

4 ) Alarm Clock Extreme - For the folks who have trouble waking up in the morning. This app is CATERED for you. You can set it up so that you answer math questions, ranging from easy to hard, before it allows you to snooze. Better start working on those multiplication tables!

5) Any.Do - A nice and simple To-Do List app. You can set reminders and swipe to remove once the task has been completed.

6) Chrome for Android - This one is self explanatory. It's the Chrome Browser for Android phones. You can even sync it with your desktop Chrome browser, so you will always have your favourite websites with you!

Better Batter Stats is the most important app I install on Android. Use it to track down which processes are running when they shouldn't be and killing your battery.

That's a good one, checks. A free alternative to that would be JuiceDefender. It monitors your daily battery usage and will act accordingly based on your habits.

I don't get it. Screen being on is the number one thing that uses battery. Being locked shouldn't really make a difference. When you lock the phone and the screen goes off, it should go into deep sleep mode, but the cpu and screen will be in use with the video, so where will the saving come from? Not trying to troll here, I'm just curious.

Well I meant, it allows youtube videos to be played like your mp3's: the screen can be turned off, and you can run other apps, or go to the homescreen while the sound play.
You dont have to have your screen occupied by the video when you only want the sound.

I recently setup my Google Play music account. Had to use a VPN proxy to fake a US ip address, but now I'm able to upload 20000 songs to Google servers. The Google play music app is actually one of the better music players I've used on Android (and I've tried most of them). Now support gapless playback, and can playback mp3, flac, ogg. (I don't have any other formats so I'm not sure about them).

If you don't want to burn through your data, just download a few albums when you are on wifi somewhere and play them as local files. Simple interface in the application, and very resource friendly - my cpu runs at its lowest speed while playing back music both locally and from the network. I can't say the same about other players I've tried. The only negative is that if you have a slow upstream internet connection, it takes forever to upload your songs. But you only have to do it once...

LED light flow is also pretty useful, you can change the types of colors and notifications they represent.

Hide It Pro - Just found this amazing app. It can hide your texts, pictures, music, video, applications. You can hide almost anything on your phone. A must for those who don't have a hobby phone!
