Mcafee End point protection vs Symantec End point? Which is better? Why?

I have decided I am paying for Virus protection for my 35 desktops... need some good solid advice on this.

Mcafee is cheaper and I am leaning towards Mcafee

I used MS Security essentials for a short time on a new W7 PC and it was OK because I was careful when surfing with W7.
Then I read a report that rated MS Security essentials as middling and dumped MS Security essentials and went back to free Avast which hasn't let me down yet since 2006.

Is free Avast better than paid for Mcafee?

I cannot answer that, because I have no recent experience with McAfee. Whenever I get a new PC or Laptop, I throw McAfee out and install Avast. Avast has never let me down.

Avast has its share of problems and I've found it slows down the systems I use. McAfee I toss out it seems to always be alarming about some crap despite turning off notifications.

Symantec is ok, Kaspersky is ok too.
I only run the free part of Avast, it does not seem impact speed much.

IMHO free Avast is better than McAfee.

FWIW I was always almost paranoid about AV security and THIS WAS the main reason for dumping M$ and moving to FREE Linux.
Windows has improved some but sadly remains a security sieve struggling to fight off constant, ever increasing attacks. Linux security is rock solid and far superior to Windows. Been using Linux since March 2007 and my PCs have NEVER been hit by virus/spyware/malware and requires no Anti Virus programs. I surf anywhere and everywhere, even 'suspect' sites with total impunity.

Linux is the BEST OS to run to protect yourself from all the nasty stuff on the www and the icing on the cake is, Linux is FREE!....

Avast never slowed down XP Pro, Vista or W7 for me.
What are you running?
