Yes, they all seem to be into video games. Has he fallen into the Harry Potter "thing?" Perhaps the entire series of novels, I know they have special deals on the set these days.
Personally I stay away from giving kids video games since I feel it rots their brain.
How bout a basketball, or a tent from Mec, or a gift certificate for some running shoes - something that gets him outside and not sitting in front of a TV.
Even music (though he may be a little young.) When I was 12, I loved getting gift certificates from Sam the Record man.

This. Or other special events happening at the time. I'd suggest against anything video game related.
He has Wii already so this may be a good idea. Any idea how much will the new game system cost?
Just give him an action figure (batman, superman, spiderman) - it doesn't matter, he'll play with it for a day (or less) and then just end up in a box somewhere.
Is he physically active? How about a pitching in with his parents to get him a membership for martial arts?
What are his interests? Start there.....
