Will this be Brian Burke’s last season?

Assuming we will have a season this year, will it be the last for Brian Burke? He has two years left on his six year contract. His teams have not made the playoffs during his tenure and IMHO there is nothing to indicate that they will turn it around this season. The old issues of no front line centre and goalie continue. For all the money that has been invested in the defense corps, it can scarcely be described as a shut-down blue line. If the Leafs do not make the playoffs:

Would management reward him with an extension at the end of this season?

Let him run out the last year of his contract in 2013-2014

Fire him at the end of this season and eat the last year of his contract.

Brian is very blunt about performance issues and evaluation. If you are what the score says you are, by his own standards Brian has failed. And I question if a core group of character, high performing players has been assembled that will give hope for the future. When we have been out of the playoffs since 2004 (?) the future has to be now.
I like Brian, and wanted to see him come to Toronto. But I feel that he has failed and should be fired at the end of this season unless we make the playoffs.
What say you?

Colangelo has been here longer and done worse. He should go first.

The Raptors are a joke. Colangelo has had more time to, not even build a winner, but just be respectable. Hasn't happened. And he doesn't have to operate under the same level of scrutiny our hockey team does.

Hell, in basketball, all you need is one, just one really, really good player to make a team competitive. And if Raps get one they leave because they can tell the team's going nowhere.

Colangelo first.

Really only need one player ... I guess you haven't followed basketball in awhile ... This has become a league where teams are putting together super teams ie at least 3 superstars on one team . Lebron James is the closest thing in NBA today to having the tools to be the greatest of alltime and he couldn't do it by himself . Shack you could say in today's NBA it's even harder to build a championship ..

What are we debating really ? Our three teams in this City are a Joke ... What a sad sack of teams this city's fans have had to cheer for ...

'What say you ?' When did we time travel back to 17th century England ?
Anyway I would not be so harsh ... yet. I would wait and see what he does coming out of this lock-out then what he does next off season.
Same old crap ... I fire him before the start of his final season. If there is any sign of improvement I likely offer a one year extension.

Bargnani you are talking winning it all, while Shack is saying just to make the playoffs.
I agree with Shack. One star, the right kind of star player, can put a team into the playoffs.

Make playoffs in NBA easier yes . Win Championship NHL is easier . A Hot goalie can do magic in the NHL that isn't the case in the NBA ie no one player can do magic and lead a team to a Championship ..

Although saying that ... Give Leafs the best goalie in the league would they have made the playoffs last year ? Give Raptors Lebron would they have made the playoffs ? I say yes to both how about you Ironhead .

I get the feeling that Burke is about done with with toronto as well.

Don`t be suroprised if he ends up in Daly or Bettmann`s position in a couple of years

Typical of Toronto Sports Scene .. After having a medicore season 9-9 the Argo's have a new conference to report that they have given extensions to their coach and GM . They have yet to win a playoff game this year but 9-9 is deemed sucessful in Toronto it seems.

I didn't say championship. I just said to be competitive, meaning close to a playoff spot.

I remember when Lou Alcindor (at the time) took the worst team in the league (Milwaukee, 1st overall pick) to the playoffs as a rookie. Basketball has the smallest roster, smallest starting lineup and the really, really good player can be involved 80% of the time easily. With those dynamics in mind it's hard to argue that a single player in any other sport can have as much impact as a single player in basketball even if they don't take them to the promised land.

What are we debating really ? Our three teams in this City are a Joke ... What a sad sack of teams this city's fans have had to cheer for ...
Sadly, that is the bitter truth.

Who knows if it will be his last year. He didn't have alot to work with when he got here, and the direction of the team is far better now then it was with JFJ. He might not have built a championship team, but atleast alot of good potential lies in the Marlies which didn't before.

True. But at the end of the day, he should be judged by the top of the pyramid, not the base.

Jake Gardiner looks like he's a step or two away from being a bona fide NHL star...

Maybe Joe Colborne....
Still neads some seasoning and needs to add some size/weight

I still don't want to give up on Nazim Kadri....but his chances of being an elite player seems to be diminishing with each passing year....

Dallas Eakins. But probably for another team.

There were a couple of teams that passed on Eakins (the Kings being one of them) so I guess he's not yet ready for Prime Time....

Funny how we are talking about how 1 player can change the fortunes of different eam sports. You wouldn't think in a sport like football where rosters are huge that it would happen but I see what Andrew Luck is doing for the Coltsthis year , who were crap last year, and then It it made me think that maybe you can add football to the debate .

kadri and colborne have been total busts this year far as im concerned.. 0 goals and just 7 assists combined with 33 shots combined in 9 games

Jake looks great though.. as well as carter ashton, and kenny ryan .. there are some other prospects that are in the echl because of the lockout

they also have D man Mike kostka signed from norfolk over the offseason who won the calder cup last june.

HE plays with Gardner and they are a great pair on the back end for the marlies

well besides the Rock's & marlies record(s) 9-9 will most likely be toronto's best record etc

burke's made some good trades and drafts and also when it was needed hasnt done anything like get a number 1 goalie for riemer if there is a season this year
