Being from the UK, I used to really enjoy fresh bread, sharp cheese and a few pickled onions for lunch on weekends. I can no longer find jars of pickled onions in any of the major supermarkets? What the heck happened? Any suggestions?
That does it, a trip to Pickering Market is on the cards this weekend... They sell Mr Kipling apple pies and cherry bakewells. Been looking for those for nearly 10 years. Thankyou so much

A couple of other recipes from my UK childhood 100 years ago. Both are gauranteed to clog arteries with a gelatinous life shortening goo......ok, so this thread lead me to the kitchen to recreate another taste of my youth:
the Devils Sandwich - an unholy alliance of a cheese sandwich dipped in a mixture of egg and cream then fried.
My arteries hate you, and I accept no responsibility for the state of your arteries if you try this.
I just returned from a week in the UK and enjoyed a "full english" each morning. I must admit that by day seven I was ready for some fruit. Can't beat the pints on the Kensington pavements watching the the tall girls in their tight leggings walk by.A couple of other recipes from my UK childhood 100 years ago. Fried bread. Just fry the bread in the left over fat from a bacon fry up. Not too much melted fat, so that the end result is bacon fat impregnated slightly crispy slice of bread. Eat it hot out of the pan. You will need a a serviette for this one. I made this one Sunday morning for for an Ex. She was a Public health Nurse. She was appalled.
Really nice fresh bread slavered with with cold beef dripping. Probably took 3 days to digest. My Grandmother used to make it for me when I was a nipper. She tried to bribe me into behaving myself with this treat. I ate the treat and still behaved like a little shit. Which seemed to lead to more bread and dripping. Amazing blood still flows through my arteries.
