Utility crews from Alabama ready to help hurricane stricken and desperate people in New Jersey without power have been told to "stand down" and some are already headed back home. Why? Because they're non-union workers.

The city of Toronto will not even allow a non-unionized contractor to bid on City of Toronto Construction work, or TTC construction work.

You don't need to go to NYC to see union BS, there's tons of it here right in T.O.

However, the article states that "A third Alabama utility, Decatur Utilities, said its employees were asked to affiliate with a union before starting to work on the power restoration in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy" one hopes that this also turns out to be an "urban rumor."

Call me a communist but it would make sense to have them affiliate if they are working with/for a union company for insurance purposes. These aren't volunteers but people working short term for another company under a different contract. I would hope though that they were offered a expedited short term membership and that someone other than the workers had to pay any costs involved.

It would depend upon how it was set up. If the contract was with the other utility the workers should be covered by their own company.

A couple of days ago Obama showed up for a photo op and helicopter ride with NJ governor Krispy Kreme. Obama said he wouldn't accept any excuses or red tape getting in the way of the recovery. I guess Union interference is ok with him.

A real President like Mitt Romney would not take shit from any union in a crisis like this. Obama has already forgotten about the crisis and only cares about being re-elected. Too bad for him it won't happen.
