Question about Samsung Galaxy S III

I have noticed this phone selling on craigslist for anywhere between $500 and $600 but I have also seen the Samsung Galaxy S III going for $200 on sites like amazonwireless.com.

Can someone please explain to me the discrepancy in the prices? I must be missing something . Seems odd to me that this phone would go for $200 on some sites but then other people are selling it on craigslist for as much as $600. Are there different versions of the phone that are more expensive or something?

Okay forgive me as this might be a silly question but I am confused I looked at the Rogers website (see link below) and on the right hand side there is a drop down box. When I click on Phone and Plan it says $160 . When I click on Phone only it says $649.99. So does that mean that the phone device on its own without any plan at all costs $650? Why does the phone on its own cost more than the phone with the plan?

Because they want to make you pay for the phone over the 3 year contract. I would just buy the phone outright from a third party so it is fully functional and features are not locked out. Then when you want to leave rogers you can go.

You are subsidizing the cost of the phone over 3 years, paying an inflated price for your monthly service. You pay upwards of $60 a month for voice and data which ends up costing about $2, 000 after 3 years. With Mobilicity or Wind, you can get the same monthly package for roughly half that.

I have been looking at the Galaxy S2 X recently. It is compatible with the big three as well as Wind and Mobilicity. Bell/Telus were selling it outright for over $500, while Koodoo, Future Shop and Best Buy had various sales and included a gift card which effectively cut the price down to $200. I didn't act fast enough and it went back up a little.

There are often clear out sales when new devices are released, and various promotional offers almost monthly. I really like the look of the Samsung S3, but don't want to pay overpriced monthly charges on Bell or Rogers etc.

I will probably wait for the S2 X to go on sale again and grab one then.

Because that $160 does NOT include the cost of getting LOCKED into a 3 year plan.

Rogers have had deals recently for zero $$ and $49 (after rebate) for the Galaxy 3. I selected the Galaxy based on advice that I received on terb (thanks Kathleen!). I paid the $49 and took the upgraded plan at $65 per month. They waived the admin fee of $35, and gave me the call display and voicemail $12.95 package for free. The latter was due to a dispute over what was promised when the order was first placed. I am happy with the deal and am just begining to find my way around my new toy.

Just about 2 miles past appropriate
S III is a fantastic phone, very fast. Cheap phones with crippling plans are a horrible scam that almost everyone gets rooked into. Do yourself a favour and scrape up the money to buy the phone outright. It's cheaper in the long run.

If you are looking for a good, no-contract, modern generation phone take a look at Google's Nexus 4, that they sell at google.ca/play. You buy it direct from google and they ship it to you, you pay the full cost of the phone, and then you go get a plan without having a contract because you own your phone outright and it comes unlocked direct from Google. The N4 was made by LG, prior Nexus phones by different vendors, Google seems to give each of the major vendors a shot at putting out a Nexus phone. The most recent one, it was LG's turn.

The S3 is a better phone than the N4 only because Samsung has added a bunch of bells and whistles. S3 has touchwhiz and supports a larger number of video codecs, has a slightly better camera, and you can replace the battery or put an SD card in. But otherwise, they are very similarly specced phones, in terms of cpu/memory/android/screen/etc and near as I can tell the Nexus 4 is selling at cost. It's half the price of the S3.

S3 is a better phone but it's questionable whether it is twice as good, whereas the Nexus 4 is the pure vanilla current generation Android with no extras. The Nexus 4 will get more frequent and more up-to-date versions of Android because it is maintained directly by Google, and will be maintained longer--Samsung stops upgrading their phones other than bug fixes after 18 months.

I was looking at upgrading my phone to either S3 or N4, but I have decided instead to wait for S4/N5, I think, coming soon :)
