Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of Dalton McGuinty announcing his resignation as Premier of Ontario:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank Premier Dalton McGuinty for his contributions to Ontario and to Canada during his time as leader of the province.

“Our two governments have worked together to serve Ontarians, from implementing Canada’s Economic Action Plan to keeping the auto industry in the province of Ontario, and I salute Mr. McGuinty’s many years of dedicated public service.

“On a personal level, I extend to Mr. McGuinty my very best wishes for all his future endeavours.”

Does Harper's announcement surprise you? Even though they may disagree on many things, politicians who demand respect and civility will show such, especially to their opponents. We may criticise them, and disagree with what they do, but their jobs are difficult, even at the best of times.

REAL Example

Really? Are there that many civil servants in this province? Get real.
If you don't believe civil servants can effect voting,...see Kitchener/waterloo recently !!!

And until people finally had enough,...see TORONTO !!!

Teachers aren't classed as civil servants. Their employer is a given school / school board, and that board receives remuneration from the Provence. The same goes for the teachers' unions, who nominally work for their dues paying teachers. Even then, despite the Union and NDP resources and ground game, none of that means squat unless there's a disgruntled constituency to mobilize.

Yes they moved both Oakville and Mississauga...from the west GTA where power is in highest demand....to KINGSTON!

Now we gotta pipe the gas all the way to Kingston.....get the plants built.....then build high powered hydro lines to bring the hydro back to Mississauga and Oakville.
Ummm... there's a gas pipeline already in place to supply the Lennox plant, and there's a 500/230 kv switchyard to feed power into the Ontario power grid from that site.

Do your homework first.
The re-siting of the Oakville plant to the Lennox site shows just how sneaky the Liberals are in this power plant mess. Ontario Power Generation - whose sole shareholder of course is the Ontario government - is being forced to sell a portion of their land at Lennox near Napanee to accommodate the moved gas plant. Do you think OPG will get fair market value in the sale of that land or will the shareholder force them to take a hair cut to keep relocation costs down and appease TransCanada (the project developer)? In addition, OPG is being told to supply certain site services to TransCanada at cost, all in an effort to minimize the damage (i.e. hide the true cost) for the unnecessary move of the plant. Ditto for the cancelled Mississauga gas plant which is being relocated to a portion of land owned by OPG at the Lambton Generating Station south of Sarnia. Haircut number two.

Keep living in your fantasy world. Kitchener Waterlo was lost by the liberals and the NDP on account of the public waking up to the need for change, be it the NDP or the PC, anything but the fiberals. Condescendnig and lying McFuck was bad news for the liberal party, right from the start. I used to be a card carrying liberal, and in my heart will always be a grit. But that SOB made me sick to my stomach.

Don't let party ideology blind you from the truth.

This is right out of the blue. Is he that scared of the teachers?
No... And I say this as an NDPer, but he was on record as saying that this was likely to be his last (full) term. He mishandled the wage freeze issue over all. Then there's those power plants. The polls don't look good. He has a rather Paul Martin like finance minister (Duncan), who looks rather grasping. Despite his leadership review I don't think the villagers were that happy. Just like I said before, in politics it's always better to go out on your feet as opposed to on your back (knives optional).

Should he have been more afraid of the teachers? Probably. Any Premier in the country is nuts to fuck with their teachers, nurses (and nurse-alikes), and doctors unless you really have your ducks in a row. In the case of Dalton, he should have froze (and stopped bonuses to) MPs, consultants, senior bureaucrats / heads of ministries, and crown corporations first. Then he should have worked something out with the public sector employees after that (wage freeze and partially monetize some benefits). Then he should have then used that as a template for the teachers (and nurses), likely while preserving grid increases (if not cost of living) for people on the bottom half of the pay scale (to reflect the level of education vs. the often low level of starting pay).

That: a) would have been what a competent government in a fiscal mess did, and b) might have actually worked. Instead you had a minority government that tried to channel Harris (in fear), and they got what they're about to get. (Whacked.)

Various Liberals are putting out rumours that Dalton plans to run for the federal Liberal leadership. When asked, McGuinty said he has no immediate plans regarding his next steps.

I may be proven wrong, but I'm not buying it.

While there is apparently a team in place if Dalton decides to run for the federal leadership, I think this idea is mostly being floated to distract from the reasons behind McGuinty's resignation. He's in trouble in the polls, at war with his own supporters, and the "contempt" issue facing his energy minister and possibly others has threatened to blow up into something huge.

I think those are the real reasons he is stepping down.

The funny part of all this is if you think about it you really only need a minimum of 34% of voters in a riding to win (assuming the other two major parties get 33 or less each).

And whne you factor in voter turn out. It really is a small number of people making some major decisions.

Much like in the states I'm disappointed that we are led to believe that there are only 3 choices when voting (2 in the states). We get this weird flip flopping between the three parties as people pick the party most likely to beat the one they don't want..... rather than vote for who they want in their heart of hearts.

he is going to go into federal politics
He wouldn't make a good bench-warmer, and I can't see either McGuinty making a leadership play this time round. Maybe as the next-next federal Liberal leader.

I was shocked, what a crook he is turns out the pricetag for those 2 power plant closures could be more than 500 mill. so he basically robs and pillages, bankrupts ontario, then when he's fucked things up so much that the province can;t function, he leaves. what a parasite mcguinty is.

Both of you are technically right! During the elections the PC's narrowly won that riding. Dalton saw that and offered the MPP a nice job in order to get the election. The election was called and the NDP won the riding.

On the other hand good they finally took out the trash out of Queen's Park. Now we need to get him in front of an inquiry.

McGuinty.is a wily and skilled politician who could suck and blow at the same time. He has been lying and breaking election promises from day one. Three times elected as premier is a reflection of the people of Ontario. Ontario is the most complex and diverse province in Canada which is why he was able to stay alive politically for so long in this sea of multiple self interests. As he slithers away under prorogue, watch the Canadian dollars drop tomorrow as Canada's economic engine's premier just hit the eject button and as he parachutes away the plane is left to fly through the worst economic turbulence and scandals in Ontario history without any pilot or destination.
