here and there
I support user pay for transit as well as the addition of toll roads on a user pay system - only this time let's not sell the road to the private sector. I also support the TTC streamlining it's operation and moving to privatize some of the non-essential services like cleaning the buses etc. Like any large government/union organization, there's a lot of fat to trim.

they shouldn't. the gov't should put money collected from fuel tax into roads. the tax money is being used wrong. taxes collected by an industry should be turned back into that industry.
Fuel taxes will have to go way up. I'd be OK with that.

Where have I heard this before. Oh yeah, like Premier Dad's health tax that was supposed to go to healthcare but ended up in general coffers. Or tax on gasoline that is supposed to go to roads and transit but gets spent on other things.
If you give a politician (any politician) more money, they immediately borrow two times against it. They are like drunken sailors with your tax dollars. I remember a temporary tax for financing Petro Canada and an increase gas tax to help cover the 407 which was later privatized at a huge continual loss (through toll) to taxpayers. They are liars - I wouldn't give them a cent just on principle.

You already loose 13% of whatever cash you have left after paying federal & provincial taxes ... now people are willing to see it rise yet again ? Every item that you pay for including , gas, cars, services, etc you will pay more. Screw them.

not really. a lot of cars paying a lot of tax. i think we would be better of if we had a gov't that didn't waste an incredible amount of money.

If Jennifer's numbers are correct, the whole problem sounds like someone with a 20 year old car paying 300 a month in repairs to keep it on the road, losing a day a month work because the car is in the shop, instead of going to the bank and borrowing 20k for a new car, with payments of 400 per month, but no lost time and better fuel mileage.

Toronto desperately needs another north south subway (either Bathurst, or Broadview) or a "Downtown Relief Line" which would run along Queen and then run diagonally to connect to Bloor around Jane in the west and Victoria Park in the East.
I like the sound your DRL.

On another note, I was at Front and Spadina the other day. I see that they're already having to replace the Streetcar tracks from the Lakeshore to who knows how far north. The Spadina Streetcar right-of-way is only 15 years old. What a traffic nightmare!

Replace the TTC and privatize. Get rid of the unions and slash wages. Use that money to upgrade the stations with heat, in the wintertime and sliding glass door barriers between the subway and passenger platform (prevent jumpers). Have on duty security to deal with altercations on the platform and to respond faster to in subway altercations. Improve subway traffic algorithms to manage rush hour traffic and minimize delays. Pay subway drivers $10/hr for sitting there to talk on their cellphones while they push a lever. Drug test the bus drivers like they do in the States. No Bus driver should be smoking weed, high or be drunk while operating a bus in traffic. Pay private companies for competitive contracts for TTC maintenance and have that maintenance done off hours, rather than at rush hour or during the day. Pay those people overtime for working those hours and sparing rush hour time delays.

Get rid of all the retarded TTC employees and replace them with educated college grads not related to anyone in the TTC, eliminate nepotism. It's clear that most of the TTC belong to the same retarded family from Oshawa for some reason, and they all seem to have an IQ of 90.

That 1% tax will not go to the customer in reduced fares. It will go to politicians and the TTC Union. Fares will still go up.

ABolish the TTC, GO and all other regional transit companies and create one company to develop a regional plan, and implement a regional gas tax (10 cents / L) to help pay for transit.

The gas tax here is about $0.15... which is why I drive 15 minutes to get outside the region or fuel up south of the border (to avoid the tax)
going south to fuel up almost isn't worth it anymore.

your hatred for truck drivers is boring. last time this came up you claimed trucks caused more accidents than cars, so i got links and numbers to prove you wrong. if trucks stop moving your world falls apart.

here is a question. a car uses say 500$ a month in fuel as a high estimate, my truck uses 500$ a day. who pays more in taxes ?
I do not recall you posting anything of the sort.

I DO recall you challenging me that a single fully ladden highway truck causes as much damage to the pavement structure as 10,000 car passes (you didn't believe me) and I demolished your stance with links to various civil engineering websites (AASHTO being the main one), so you were wrong there.

Trucks destroy our highways and they get off scott free.

You babble on about not wanting to pay for transit or that transit users should pay the costs of public transit and yet you yourself as a truck driver do not want to pay for the roads that you and your truck destroy.

All you do is drive a truck, so please, tell me what your world would be like without the people who design and build your roads? Because sure as shit, you wouldn't have a clue how to design and build a bridge / road.

actually you recall everything completely wrong which is not really a shock. you said trucks cause more wrecks than cars, i proved that wrong. then i said i wasn't good at math and asked you to clarify how you got to that and all you could manage to do was insult me and not explain how any of it worked. someone else challenged you with links, not me.

trucks pay more in fuel tax in a month than you will for a year, not to mention the permits and special licensing we need to operate. so we pay more there as well.

we don't have to talk about what my world would be like without roads cuz there are roads. lets talk about your world without trucks bringing you 100% of everything you use on a daily basis. the second part of that is that you are acting like all i have ever done was drive truck.

Horseshit.

Post your link about how safe trucks are.

Secondly, you pay FUCK ALL in fuel taxes as to what it costs to build highways. FUCK ALL, regardless of how much fuel or licensing fees you think you pay. I would be all for MTO coming up with a calculation as to what it costs to build highways in the province and charging users tolls based on how much it costs to maintain the roads for each user. You my friend would be facing some massive bills (though obviously all these costs would just need to be passed on down to the consumer).

As to the roads already being here - well yeah, but truck drivers sure as shit didn't have anything to do with that fact. All you do is drive on the damn road that someone else designed and built for you.

I'm not so stupid as to say that we could live in a society without roads for trucks. (though I strongly advocate putting freight on trains), but you seem to think that transit users should be paying for transit through the fare box, while you in your idiot truck get off scott free. Last time I checked, Transit users pay taxes as well too. I would wager that a very large percentage of the users of the subway in Toronto pay a hell of a lot more tax than you do in fact that goes to subsidizing YOUR livelihood.

When why is there still a TTC, Mississauga Transit & GO Transit? Why are they not run by Metrolinx? Is there a regional gas tax for transit?

MEtrolinx did not exist when I lived there
GO Transit is now Metrolinx. They just call it "GO Transit" because that's what people know it by.

TTC and Mississauga Transit still are their own entities, but Metrolinx as the Provincial governing body was established in order to streamline transit planning going forward. For example, the new LRT on Eglinton Avenue is being built by Metrolinx, not the TTC and Metrolinx will operate it (though just recently I heard that they may contract TTC to operate it.)

You can read more about Metrolinx and their mandate on their website.

highways wouldn't be built if you didn't have the trucks to build them. i spend 500$ a day in fuel in my truck, how much of that is fuel tax ? how much do i pay for inspections, licensing, permits and everything else you don't know about. you an strongly advocate rail all you want, it won't work. trucks are a 100% necessity. i said this to you before, you're welcome you ungrateful twit.

Why do we need to pay more in taxes when the current system is not properly managed?
The unions extract more than enough from me already through taxes, thank you
Get the expenses under control before even thinking about asking for more $.

Frank Castle suggested an increase in taxes to maintain teachers excess

So now I am wondering what the next damn union will be coming around the corner with thier hands out looking for more excess and shrugging it off and saying "just raise taxes" . The posties? CUPE?
Enough is enough

Our tax dollars are better spent building toll highways and then selling it to private consortiums.

Making sure of course to include non disclosure and no competition clauses.

My support for any sort of increased public funding for transit is dependant on one non-negotiable condition:
The TTC must not operate the new lines.

The TTC union must be broken, not expanded.
