For all you remotely piloted/drone aircraft people, have you thought of the logistics, as one gets closer to a pole now one needs many satellites in orbits that provide continuous coverage of the High Arctic (and with redundancy) rather than two or three satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
How many military satellites does Canada have? What launch capability does Canada have?

I wouldn't be ''from scratch' as it wouldn't be designing totally new radio, guidance, weapons systems. It could be more a case of taking what's on the market, much in Canada, and applying them to the new fighter.
Oh come on. From an old design? How much made-in-Canada technology is exported to the U.S., U.K. or Europe for their fighter jets?

If Canada had a sophisticated enough aircraft industry it could do the same thing as Japan where most military aircraft purchased from the U.S. are built under license in Japan.

We can build BMWs but I doubt fighter jets. The only company left is Bombardier but do they anything military?

Bombardier could build anything they wanted to if there was a market or contract. They choose airliners. One other company that could jump in would be MacDonald Deitwiler or MDA.

I think we should buy the smallest number of the cheapest plane that will do the job and sink the rest of the money into research on drones with a view to eventually becoming a world leader in that area.

If the new Avro Arrow has windows that roll down, Mitt Romney may be very interested in them, if he is elected POTUS!....:thumb:

Why Plane Windows Don't Roll Down, as Romney Would Like

A plane carrying Ann Romney, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's wife, had to make an emergency landing Friday in Denver.

Airliners have cockpit windows that can open. And they can be opened midflight also, but it depends on how high you fly and how fast.

Cessna's can also fly with open windows, and people often do so

If they've never built them before and don't for anyone else, you really think there won't be any cost overruns. Come on.

Would you hire a contractor that has delivered war planes over one that never has undertaken such a contract?

And you think that the F-35 will be delivered on budget? Really?

We are basically going to pour 50 billion dollars into an American black hole. We might as well pour 50 billion into a Canadian black hole.

And the plane is supposed to be the worst 'design by committee' plan out there.

How do you go from $35 Billion to $50 Billion? Wouldn't the government sign a fixed price contract?

You're also oversimplifying. There is no Canadian track record to mass produce any military planes. Better to buy the cheaper, non-stealth Super Hornets than to take a chance on a Canadian-made solution which is not even on a drawing board, meaning it would be delayed in the first place.

The F-35 is by a manufacturer that has built war planes for years, and since it is a cousin of the F-22, they are way ahead of any Canadian-made solution.

A fighter like the F-4 took only 8 years from concept to service, the Tornado program was give approval in early 1976 and it was in service in 1984. How long have we been waiting for the freakin' F-35. The concept started around 2001 with the X-35. We're still waiting.

Who was talking about cost over runs. Like there have been know on the F35, with a known company. I was just saying it could be built with a good team put together from anywhere.

All we need is for a Quebec company like Bombardier to get another government contract.

Hey, if they can deliver a fighter even comparable or better than the Super Hornet for made in Canada jobs, then go for it. I doubt though that they can compete with Boeing which has a proven product.

You might want to know that Bombardier is one of the top employers in Canada and operates outside of Quebec, employing ~18,000 in across Canada and ~30,000 worldwide. They compete with Boeing in the commercial airline business quite well in their niche.
