Anthony Sturman was caught downloading child porn when he accidentally printed off images of child abuse using a work printer

A senior manager at oil giant Shell was caught downloading indecent images of children at home when he mistakenly tried to print out some pages on his work printer, a court has heard.

Anthony Sturman, 59, sent six pages containing indecent material to a printer at the Waterloo headquarters of Shell UK, where he had worked for 15 years.

Sturman was viewing child porn at his country home in Kent when he pressed the print button with the intent to print images on this home printer. His PC was linked to his work system, so the images were produced at his office's shared printer instead.

Seven of the images printed were categorised at level four, the second highest level of child abuse.

A horrified colleague discovered the images when she unclogged a jammed printer on the 18th floor at the Shell Centre in Waterloo.

There were 42 indecent images across six pieces of paper, Inner London Crown Court heard.

Darren Ponds, prosecuting, said Ruth Elliott, a colleague at Shell, had discovered the images.

'A jam had occurred and when that jam was fixed the backed up items began to print. A number of pages of indecent images of children were printed.'

Examination of the data from the printer revealed the items had come from Sturman's computer and he was arrested two days later.

Yogain Chandarana, defending, said Sturman had destroyed the life he had built for himself.

'He has actively sought treatment for himself since his arrest' he said. 'He has laid out his soul in front of probation officers.'

'Clearly though, he did not intend to produce these images on a shared work printer.

'He has caused a complete destruction of the life he had built...because of his behaviour.'

Judge Lindsay Burns sentenced Sturman to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to take part in a sex offenders programme.

'You do not pose any significant risk, and the chances of you re-offending are at the lowest level,' he said.

'The level of intention in this case sets this apart from other, far more serious cases.

'I have to say that the view you have taken, rather unhappily, is rare in the courts, with other offenders like you.

'You have shown considerable remorse and understanding for what you have done.'

Sturman, of Faversham, Kent, admitted one count of producing indecent images of children.
He will also have to sign onto the sex offenders' register.

Shit, just printed this to my work computer .... dang ....
I don't see the humour, of any kind, associated with child pornography.

Obviously you are a little more obsessed with the topic. PhilH was joking about sending embarrassing material to your work printer not condoning child porn.

The same thought passed through my mind too PhilH - letters to girlfriends, job application to a competitor, naked women of Iceland, ......

He sounds a little uptight but I won't comment until I know him. He might have reacted that way for a number of different reasons so I don't want to speculate. Namaste.

I'm not a lawyer, but his was probably a pretty non-idiotic comment by his defense.. They need to show that his offenses (if any, innocent until proven guily yadda yadda yadda) were personal and not done on corporate time.

I'm completely aware he was joking, but anything related to child porn is no joke to me, or may others who had to deal with it in life.

You're correct.

His post made me chuckle
and you're just being a smart ass.

On this site we have everything from horny to kinky with a little perv thrown in. God bless all. But anything to do with children deserves a special place in Hell.

Playing Devil's advocate. What if there was a little girl who was sexually assaulted from a young age, as a child.......she grew into a sexually promiscious teen...who then lived on the streets selling her body, eventually as the internet became available to her she became an escort.I wonder what humour, of any kind, she'd find of us on a board that reviewed her sexual exploits.

I'm in general a fun guy but I'm pretty sure the posting gent was not poking fun at child exploitation.Lighten up and see it for what it was.

I agree with LD - a very stupid statement. If I may paraphrase: 'Clearly though, he did not intend to get caught'

I love how his lawyers present him as the poor victim who has seen the error of his ways. Good job...

What I don't get is why the judge fell for it. The guy needed to time in jail to "reflect"...

His "ruined life" probably doesn't even close to the ruined lives of the kids in the pictures. I get that he didn't produce the images, but without a market for them, the producers are out of business.
