I think Halal and Kosher are the dietary rules but Halal and Kosher methods and standards are very different. Halal is Islamic dietary law and Kosher is Jewish dietary law.

A couple decades ago, Halal food wasn't available easily in Toronto so some Muslim family friends would buy Kosher meat. I would assume that means thay the rules are close enough in a pinch. Tons of halal products now though. I believe that Maple Leaf Farms has a line of Halal products.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that all meat that is Kosher meets Halal standards, but not all Halal meat qualifies as being Kosher. I don't have the faintest idea why.

I believe that Muslims can eat meat that is "killed religiously" if there is no halal meat available. That would include kosher meats. Kosher cuts of meat, however, must be produced under the supervision of a rabbi and there are no substitutes.

Halal is a Arabic term that designates an object that is allowed to be used/consumed or an action that is allowed by Islamic Law. This includes meats that are permissible and slaughtered in the proper manner. Most Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern and North African restaurants serve Halal meats.

Kosher foods are those that conform to the regulations of the Jewish Halakhic law framework, kosher meaning fit or allowed to be eaten only by the Halakhic community.

The basic regulations are very similar and in some cases are the same, this is why many Muslims will partake in Kosher meats. However the rules that govern Kosher foods are more complex.

Google is you friend.

Chickens and turkeys killed for their flesh in Kosher slaughterhouses often suffer broken legs and wings as a result of rough handling and malfunctioning equipment. When they are slaughtered incorrectly, these sensitive animals survive for several minutes as they hang upside-down from metal shackles and can only writhe in pain as they slowly bleed to death.

Cattle raised for Kosher meat are castrated, their horns are ripped from their heads, and third-degree burns (branding) are inflicted on them—all without any painkillers . The cruelty discovered during PETA's investigation into AgriProcessors was shocking, but according to Kosher authorities, it is not unique to this particular slaughterhouse.

You think Maple Leaf or any other meat packers slaughter their chickens any better? Well they don't! I saw a 3 hour documentary on PBS on how all of North America slaughters their animals. The chickens and cattle are treated badly everywhere.........not just in kosher slaughterhouses.

Why is Kosher slaughter illegal in Sweden, Norway and Switzerland?

Apparently it's because they don't stun the animal with electric shock first and as such, it is viewed inhumane. I'm not saying that kosher slaughter is better. Just that the reality of animal slaughter for human consumption takes place everywhere.
