Gotta luv Apple for making things sooooo easy and never more convoluted than necessary, eh.....:D

Fluke
Known issues
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Support: is incomplete at this time. To make Fluke run, go into your Applications, right-click on iTunes, head to Get Info, and check off "Open in 32-bit Mode".
Only 16bit/44.1KHz files play fine. Any other resolution affects the speed of playback which is a known Xiph.org issue.
Embedded artwork is not supported. However if you've got an iTunes Store account, select the songs you added, right-click and hit Get Album Artwork.
iPod, iPhone, iPad, Airport Express, Apple TV and other devices from Apple are NOT supported — Fluke uses a third-party library not available on those devices.
CD burning does not work for the same reason as the above.

why wouldn't you just make them mp3?
Agreed. Played around with both and still think mp3 is just as good.
However some feel FLAC is better than mp3 since it's not compressed as much.

oh i see. play the actual flac file on an iphone! while i have no doubt that the flac file can be a better sound (depends really on the source), i have never done it. the only flac i have seen are live recordings of music. i convert them to mp3 and that's plenty good enough for my use. however, a quick search on the apple store reveals several flac players. one or tow of which say they are free.

Been seeing more and more FLAC files on torrent sites than in the past. Apparently some prefer them but I think a 320 bitrate mp3 is just as good.

Well in technical terms, it is not just as good. One is lossless, one is lossy.

Storage is cheap these days. Given FLAC is an open standard, I find it a good archival medium. You can always convert on the fly when you download to a phone/mp3 player if mobile storage is a concern.

i agree with everything you say. but i have never seen a recording that was really worth archiving. i guess if you're a super-fan of some group it might make sense. tell me you're not saving grateful dead live recordings. please.

Never seen a recording worth archiving? I find too many worth archiving! I am not into having 10,000 Grateful Dead shows, but on the other hand I do not take the hipster stance and look down on what other people listen to (as long as they do not make me listen to it :).

Like beauty, it's all in the eye of the beholder on what one decides to archive....;)

If you're using windows, install foobar2000. It is the best windows-based music player app available. It supports any audio file you can think of, and can easily convert to other formats. Just load up your playlist, select which format to convert to and you are done. Even an older pc should be able to convert a flac playlist to mp3's in a matter of minutes.

If you are determined to keep your files lossless, you can convert flac to ALAC and import into itunes.
