NEW YORK (AP) — New York City officials say several people have been shot outside the Empire State Building and that the gunman is dead.

City police say three or four civilians have been wounded in the Friday morning shooting and that the shooter is dead.

A fire department spokesman says it received a call about the shooting just after at 9 a.m. Friday and that emergency units were on the scene within minutes.

The spokesman had no information about how many people were wounded or their conditions.

The shooting occurred at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Muslim is not a race.
Latino is not a race.

At this point they are saying that besides the shooter (who was shot and killed by the NYPD), at least one woman victim is dead and another person is in extremus. It seems to have been a Robbery "gone bad" with indiscriminate shooting.

By the way it should be mentioned that the City of New York has probably the most stringent gun control laws in the U.S.

That is exactly the problem. Everybody should be forced to carry weapons, Preferably fully automatic handguns.

Now being said that this was a disgruntled person who shot a co-worker, and then started shooting random pedestrians on the sidewalk, he was then shot and killed by two NYPD Officers on anti-terrorism duty at the Empire State Building.

You hear of these shooting spree incidents. Given the levels of gun ownership (for protection) in US, why doesn't it happen that there would be armed members of the public around, who would reach for their revolvers and plug the guy?

Because it is next to impossible to own a pistol in New York State.

Wouldn't they be charged with murder if they weren't directly threatened (let's say they shot him when out of his sight)?

Some of those injured by gunfire were shot by cops trying to shoot the gunman.
Could you imagine what it would be like if civilians with much less gun experience would be shooting at the gunman?
What if they made a mistake and hunted and shot the wrong "gunman" down on hearsay facts from witnesses?
Wouldn't happen, because the "wrong gunmen" would be armed to the teeth.

The two dead are the shooter and his intended victim. Somewhat similar to the Italian ice cream patio targeted shoot here in Little Italy.

It would seem that a guy who designed Tshirts and had been laid off last year was pissed off at the vice president of sales, who he claimed had not been doing enough to market his Tshirts. So pissed off guy fired 4 or 5 shots into sales guy, killing sales guy on the spot.

Then T shirt guy calmly walks away from the scene, but a bystander ID's him to the cops outside the Empire State building who confront the Tshirt guy and Tshirt guy pulls his gun on the cops and the cops proceed to go Rambo on Tshirt guy.

9 innocent bystanders were shot in process - as it turns out by cops who were lousy shots.

Tshirt guy did not fire his gun.

It was the cops who went nuts, and unlike the movies where just the perp gets shot 30 times and sort of dances as he goes down, these cops capped the Tshirt guy, but in the maylay accidently shot 9 innocent people.

Jesus Christ someone needs to tell these cops to call "mine" when they decide to shoot someone en mass.

In the movies, the cops would have nicely asked Tshirt guy to please put the gun on the pavement and show his hands. A murderer with a gun is very dangerous, especially in a crowded place.

P.S. I watched the grainy video again. The suspect did pull something out of his bag. Hard to tell if it is a gun (probably is) or if he fired. If he didn't fire, maybe it is suicide by cops.

What f*cking movies have you been watching?Anyway, seems this murderer was less dangerous than the cops.

Clearly the cops were over zealous on shooting the shit out of Tshirt guy.

Reminds me of how a few years ago in the GTA somewhere, some hero cop came across some stolen minivan and proceeded to go on a high speed chase through a residential neighbour hood and in the process ran over a priest riding a bicycle and killed the guy. Over a fucking mini van worth about a hundred dollars.

The cops in NYC reacted instinctively I suppose, but they shot 9 innocent people in the process. One can't help but wonder if it would not have been better to let the perpatrator go than to risk killing 9 more people in the name of justice.
