This is what mankind should be about. We're explorers.I hope someday we look back on the 21rst century from space, and see it as a time we stopped our barbarism and looked to the stars.Fantastic story.....

We witnessed history tonight. There is no other way to put it... landing something the size of a car to within a couple of hundred metres on a piece of land about 250 million kilometre away....

Please join me in raising a glass to all at JPL.

Very true. However within U.S politics there should be simple unity on space exploration. The offshoot products from the NASA space program over the last 50 years have been tremendous(1).Even 2% of the U.S military budget would reap huge rewards for America i believe.Creating new industries that American(and Canadian) companies could be on the ground floor access of.

yeah, same with the technology from the military... the biggest and probably most influential one - the Internet ;P

human nature has an instinctive need to explore and colonize. we did it with the earth. soon enough we will do it with our solar system. once we master interplanetary space travel, we will start by colonizing the moon. private businesses will set up space tours there. corporations will set up infrastructure, development, mining and extraction facilities. after the moon is colonized, the human race will colonize mars, and then off to colonizing the moons of planets such as saturn, jupiter, uranus and neptune. eventually the human race will colonize pluto.

it will probably be another 100 years or so before we colonize the moon.

but interstellar space travel (travel between stars) might not be possible. our next closest neighbouring solar system is alpha centauri, which is 4.3 light years away...and it is only a dream that we can ever travel there. we currently do not have the resources on earth to create a device capable of such travel...but maybe one day when technology advances and we are able to extract minerals and resouces from other planets and moons within our solar system...could interstellar travel be possible?

I think many people have this fantasy as we have fucked up the earth so much, time to move on! Your list of planets to colonize presents so many massive issues, it is hard to know where to begin. May as well add mercury to the list!

While I think space exploration is great, I think we are much better off understanding and treating the planet better. Right now, and for the foreseeable future, we have no viable alternative to earth.

PBS had a show a while back on how Mars might be terra formed.
Biggest challenges are probably heating up the planet, generating atmospheric pressure and creating moisture.

Old elementary school dream.
Current conventional wisdom is that there is no need for organic man to leave earth.
It is human consciousness that will colonize the extraterra.
