Question - Government Employment

Just wondering if anybody can help me...

I am currently going thru the screening process for a federal government position.
During this process there have been several stages including a lengthy GAT test, fingerprint clearance and now a PHYSICAL.

Although I am pretty fit, BUT have been 'not overly active' in the fitness department due to health until recenty....
Just wondering if anybody can give me some insight on the physical tests required by government employees or similar ...

Thanks everybody for any help!

They just want to make sure you're fit enough to be able to bank all those sick days, take advantage of a full pension and early retirement. :)

The physical requirements are: 1. staying awake long enough to accept the pay cheque. 2. strong enough to sign your name to the back of it. 3. being able to walk a very short picket line once a week when not involved in working.

They want to ensure that you have enough stamina to sit in a chair doing jack shit all day except during break time when you and your friends will stand beside the office water cooler (or coffee machine) and gossip about other employees and other meaningless pigshit. At the end of the day, you'll need just enough energy to pick your sticky stinky obese body up from your comfy office chair (you're going to gain lots of weight working in government) to grab your paycheck. The excitement of the latter has caused many government employees to drop dead of heart attacks, hence the newly required fitness test.

I doubt it. She said Federal Government, and the physical requirements for police candidates are made known to them from the outset.

She is likely applying for an administrative position that requires some manual labour, possibly lifting or transporting items. There is an outside agency that works with the Canadian Government to administer testing (ppc?) applicable to the position.

My educated guess is some baseline measurements (blood pressure, heart rate, basic flexibility), and lifting and manipulating weighted objects. Perhaps a stair climbing test like school bus drivers have to endure.

I wouldn't worry about it too much OP.
I listed both for that reason. Federal government position is quite a generic description as there are many fields.

But what do I know, shows my limited capacity as I automatically assumed police force.

Thekittensmeow - thank you. The position is not police, but is more than just a typical physical.
I do have some kind of stair climb, weight lifting/treadmill phase, and not sure how extensive.
I have been told its about 2 hours to complete this step.
It is NOT an office admin job. Although I am trying to keep a level of discretion, I know if gives a vague idea...
Just thought maybe somebody might have some helpful insight as to how to prepare....lol

As for some of you 'others' don't worry I will enjoy my new job which does include those sick days vaca day and that amazing pension I am looking forward to!
However I will not be sitting all day, I do expect to be in better shape then ever!
There is actually no sitting/office work for my position.......

For what its worth, a medical exam for a private sector (don't know about public sector) position is usually for insurance purposes. For example, to see if you have a fatal disease.

BTW: If you get accepted for a federal government job, you just won the lottery. Congrats!

If it is anything like the test for the police, don't worry. I have seen the police test and although you couldn't do it in a wheelchair or missing an arm, it is by no means difficult. If you can do maybe 10 pushups, 10 sit ups and can run a block or two you are fine.

It might be worthwhile asking for a job desciption. They may have the physical demands listed. As others have stated, it's likely mentioned as part of the job so that prospective employees have to be expected to exert themselves once in a while.

must be a prison guard....what else is Harper spending on? They want to make sure you aren't hiv + so you won't infect the prisoners when you "probe" them.

The federal Government employs tens of thousands of people in thousands of different roles, in hundreds of different departments in dozens of ministries.

Many of them involve physical labour. Many of them involve desk jobs. Some of them require special skills. Some of them provide on-the-job training. Some of the jobs are glamourous. Some are mundane.

Not everyone employed by DFAIT is an Ambassador. Not everyone employed by DFO is a marine biologist. Not everyone employed by CRA is a pencil-pusher. Not everyone employed by DND is a soldier.
