saw a news story about them changing the rules for EI. forcing folks to get a job. so if the gov't isn't going to be handing out EI anymore, do we still have to pay into it ?

The only people who qualify will be unionized workers who get tons of overtime in one part of the year, and are laid off for the same few weeks each year, when business is slow.

The government does not want working people get what they deserve if they get laid off. However they will support welfare bums. Our politicians are the only ones that know how to spend our money

Simon the answer is yes. The government needs all the money it can get and surpluses just go in general revenues.

Unfortunately yes. You'll have to pay EI even if you'll never qualify for benefits. The only way you can get around not paying is if you are self employee. However, I don't think it will last for long. Wsib just closed this loophole and as of 2013 selfemployees will have to pay premiums.

The government is not going to stop EI. There would be riots in the streets. What they are doing is changing the programs so that benefits are chaged for perpetual users, those who go on EI every year. Those folks will bve encouraged to move to find work in their field, or accept re-trainig (re training programs are already in place) to change fields.

The cuts do not include people that lose their jobs after paying into the system for many years. The goal is to target those that abuse the system by working just long enough to go on EI for a year.
I have met a few people that apply for jobs and work for a day or two just to stay on the system and then find a way to lose the job.
After a year of doing this they stay on a job long enough to repeat the whole process for another year. Baffling to me how people can live like this.

I know of someone who does this, his parents are rich and lives in their condo downtown rent free. I have had a few chances to go on EI but preferred to just get another job right away.

My dad's old place of employment had many who did this. They would have their whole family take turns working and then going on EI. This for the men, the women would go on OW with the kids. The leader of the household would buy the big 4 -5 bedroom home that 3-4 generations of family would live it and all would be claiming rental fees, etc. This is how they could all drive brand new cars every year, buy 2nd and 3rd properties. It is mind boggling.

The company goes out of business, my dad is ripped off in pay and left to go on EI and gets investigate to the nines. Now over 50, having worked every day of his life since he was 14, my dad can't find steady work and is doing odd jobs basically daily just to make buck. Hates it every week when he goes to the bank to take out money for food knowing his account is not in over-draft because I made another deposit for him.

it never occurred to me to go on it either. i don't even knows how long you need to work to get on it. i was at the gov't office looking at job postings and one of the workers there told me they would pay for me to get my AC/Z license and i took them up on that offer.

Fine with me if the new rules put at stop to planned usage every year, however I can see some industries losing workers. I don't like the other part of the changes which will screw the rare user.
