stories like this make me happy cuz it means that everything major is settled and now they can worry about the unimportant stuff. NY worrying about what people drink, toronto worrying about what people carry stuff in. it's a great feeling to know that we are in such good hands.

Yup. They've found all the gravy, built the promised subway lines, fixed up the Toronto housing corp, and got the mayor a nice chunk of parkland for his personal use. Now they can turn their attention to the shopping bag crisis.

The ban actually annoys me. I often hit the grocery store on my way home, there's one 24hr grocery store that's usually "on the way", and I'm on foot or travelling by TTC. I can walk home from that one in about 10-15min and often do. Now I will have to go home, get a bag, and go back to the store. Dumb. They're assuming people only ever travel by car to shop.

What a stupid thing to ban, but I guess it's easier than stopping manufacturers from using so much in their packaging. The bags did go to land fill, filled with garbage mostly and we buy platic garbage bags to put garbage in. Utterly futile attempt at making things green.

The city does not have the legal jurisdiction to unilaterally impose this.
Expect this to hit the courts..

More people probably will now, and that's so much better for the environment than walking or taking ttc, right?

You're right d_jedi, but they imposed a 5 cent tax that spread to alot of municipalities from Toronto on out. It's the chains that grab hold of this and run with it as a cost savings and for putting a green feather in their caps.

I get around.
The produce section of every supermarket has clear plastic bags for putting your fruit and vegetables in. This will not change. These bags can also be used afterwards for garbage, picking up your dog poo, etc.

While I am ducking stray bullets I will be thinking about how wonderful it is to live in a "green" city like Toronto and I will be thankful for a city council that is so focused on the really important issues.
