So I'm ordering a new laptop so I can pull up escort websites faster.

I can get a regular

750GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

or pay an extra $350 for

256GB Solid State Drive

I had a solid state before and I'm not sure I really noticed a huge difference - but its hard to compare with different laptops, different software.

I do a lot of software development, gaming, kidding about website speed.

I replaced all my hard drives with SSD's. Why not go for 120GB size as they are at a better price point ~ $1/1GB or less when on sale?

The speed is there but for just web browsing maybe not.

I replaced my optical drive with an adapter to hold a second hard drive so you can store more. Ebay sells a bunch of these caddy's depending on your model.

I sell SSD's and the reality is there isn't much difference in performance between an SSD and a regular hard drive. SSD's are built for rugged environments. Unless your planning on watching porn while flying a fighter jet, go with the hard drive and save the money. You'll get better performance with a high end uP ( processor ) and a high speed internet link. The drive is the least important when watching video.

I agree with going SSD, if you value your data then a SSD is a lot less likely to crash if at all.

So selling them is one thing, using them is totally another.

I have a PC with SSD/HDD combo and agree that the SSD allows it to boot up really fast.

LMAO... I have trouble getting a few batteries through, so I think you might be on to something.

I can see this being a real advantage to the child-pornographers of the world... :(

Get the regular hard drive and then swap it out with a 120GB later. I'm pretty sure you can get an SSD much cheaper at computer stores than what Dell will sell it with a laptop configuration. Use the 750GB drive for storage.

I've heard many horror stories about how people use SSDs only to find out that they burn out from constant use within THREE months. Something to re-consider and opt for hybrid use?

All of this is true! I installed an SSD on my machine. I ported the OP system (Win 7) to it and everything ran fine for a month or so. Then the blue screens started. Every 5 minutes. The guy in the store warned me about it and said that SSDs are notoriously unreliable, which gives credence to what this post from MayJing says...

In the end I am now back on a regular drive and had to RMA the SSD, which was replaced. It now sits on a shelf...I'm afraid to use it. If you do use an SSD, make sure you only use it for your operating system (if it's a desktop) otherwise get Carbonite back up.

This is disturbing. SSB's are suppose to last forever because there are no moving parts.

Not last forever...they have a limit as to the # of times you can write/re-write on the flash nands...it's quite high.

Failure rates depend on the type and brand. Intel is supposed to be the most reliable. So many companies are coming out with them but best to review your particular model by searching to see what feedback people are giving them.
