It is strange to realize that there are serious (2 hour waits) traffic jams on Mount Everest. Sir Edmund would have shaken his head in disbelief.
The Everest queue pix
looked just like the ones of

prospectors climbing the Chilkoot Pass to the Klondike at the turn of the last century. They had to carry a ton of supplies each before they were allowed to go onwards to a chance at fortune.

A century later, we do it for … fun?

This applies to so many things in modern life. Imagine Papa Hemingway bumping into some brat texting and not looking while he's on the way to Kinko's. Or Picasso checking TMZ to see his latest 20 year old girlfriend talking about how small his penis is. And so on.

Except none of those will happen. I realize your fantasy world is more entertaining, but the line up is real and happening today. Just sayin'.

Everest used to only be for the real seasoned climber. Now anyone with the cash and a small amount of mountaineering knowledge can make an attempt. Foolhardy in the extreme sense.

Why don't people walk up Mount Kilimanjaro. Much more fun.

It all depends on your definition of fun. 20,000+ people a year climb the highest peak in Africa, many doing it wrong and not getting the best result, but it's not the even in the same category as Mt Everest. I know it was a joke, a classic DM joke.

She must have overtrained then because she had nothing left when it came to Everest.
She had nothing left? She made it to the top and was in the way down. She got stuck in line waiting to get to the top and was running low of oxygen. Apparently they only had one rope line available, instead of the usual two or three, as a result of weather. When her guides advised her to leave, she said no. She made a bad choice as many do and pay.

You can't please everyone. I wonder if the climbers were Chinese. Did their prayers work. I suspect the local Nepalese are less radical.
They were mainly Japanese teamed up with some Chinese dudes. The locals were very religious compare to Nepalese. From what I heard, they prayed two things. One is forgiveness for their failure to stop climbers. The other is the punishment for the mountaineers.

The climbing failed. A later attempt costed 17 mountaineers' lives. To these day, Khawa karpo remains unconquered. Government banned climbing under pressure from locals.

Wow, the Chinese government listened to the locals, that's rare. I'm not sure the prayers did the damage, but then maybe they were the Westbury branch of Tibetan Buddhism. There are lots of things I like about TB, but never took it to be a reactionary religion.

I know blackrock, it was all the overtraining on the hills of Dufferin and Eglinton though.

Ms. Shah-Klorfine had been training for two years, walking and running 19 kilometres a day with 20 kilograms on her back, but she had limited climbing experience. A few trips to the Rockies for high altitude trekking would have been beneficial, but she did prepare. My climbing experience is mostly on ice and it is definitely different then on dry land. From what is reported I feel her stamina was not in doubt, but that she suffered from oxygen deprivation that contributed to confuse/bad decisions.

The training is one thing blackrock. An ascent or two in the rockies would have not made much of a difference in what happened. It is the opening of Everest to climbers of all abilities that is the problem. A cash grab for certain. Real climbers know that if you don't summit by a certain time, then it's time to bail. The ascent is were alot perish. In a weakened state, exhausted, from the climb and the early morning start, the high altitude and cold sucking the life out of your body. Everest should be closed and open only to climbers with years of experience, even seasoned climbers succumb in their quest to summit Everest. The multitudes of inexperienced holiday climbers is wrong. It should be like the Boston Marathon where you have to have not only many years of mountaneering experience, but you need to qualify in order to climb Everest.

Very good points, many pointed out earlier, but did you really mean to say 'descent'.

Why would a healthy male waste their time and money climibing Everest when instead they could put that money towards seeing all the beautiful girls at Muse, Flirt and many other fine establishments in the city?

Believe it or not there is more to experience in the world. Not that there is much wrong with naked beautiful women close to you. Why not do both?
