[h=2]“ICE " Your Phone.[/h]

Apparently this is a standard procedure paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.

ICE - 'In Case of Emergency'
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call.. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell(mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
Please forward this . It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this . It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest . ICE will speak for you when you are not able to

Since no one in my family, or friends are Paramedics, I'd rather those who are on the scene put all of thier effort into saving my life, then spend time trying to figure out who to call, that can be done once I am safe and stable in the hospital.

Why do I doubt paramedics are actually trying to place calls or gather information from peoples' phones?

well as one who does treat patients it is a very useful tool when people are found unconscious. It is used trust me. I had patient once who was out rollerblading with no ID but she had her phone with her for the music ( and her wearing it was not the reason she was injuried ) well one of the officers onsite called the ICE number and found out who she was.Had she not had the ICE number we could have done more harm then good She ended up being ok in the end .

Exactly. I do have a # on my home screen while my phone is locked, but it's not a family member's - it's in case I lose my phone to call my office and extension. What if I leave my phone at a strip joint, etc.? Wouldn't want my mom contacted by an SP.

Should she be wearing a bracelet noting allergies or medical conditions? I agree that people should carry their I.D. or at least, their OHIP cards.

The next step is to insert micro-chips in the upper arm like they do with cats and dogs and yes the US army is doing that in test runs ( blood type, allergies, meds etc etc)

2 very obvious issues with this idea
1- Most people are smart enough to password protect a cell phone
2- Every OS is different (it might sound funny but I worked retail; many people have issues even finding a contact list & this is further compounded as many smartphones started making separate apps to store the ICE info instead of in contact lists; in an emergency a paramedic is not going to search your phone for the ice info or app)

Yes they are. The aforementioned variation of the ICE idea is as dumb as a bag of hammers.

1) on your home locked screen put an if lost number and an emergency number.
2) password protect your phone if it isn't
This makes the most sense to me.
Recently read a story about an unlocked cell phone stolen from a car. Used GPS to guide them to owner's home and robbed it.
Then, texted husband to ask for ATM pin, and got it (saved texts provided guide to speaking with husband in familiar terms)

Very glad to hear that she is ok.
