I think I'll give you that one. Yes, the C stands for cruiser - cos the early carriers were cruiser-sized (not converted cruisers, usually). The V comes from the english word aViation - which is near enough to the french word voler to win you the prize.

The letters-plus-numbers designations of US warships were originally introduced because ships names are not (quite) unique. The navy was already using CA as a designation for another class of cruisers.
