'ATL' or 'Atl' meant Atlanta.

ALTA - Alberta ... Reason being that the 'L' came before the 'T'.
ATL - Atlanta ... The first three letters of the city.

How anybody gets Atlanta from 'ALTA' is beyond me.

In fact Alta. was the 'official' abbreviation I was taught in school, between dinosaur incursions. But in those days Michigan was Mich. and Saskatchewan was Sask. The current fashion for almost meaningless two-letter short-forms has done away with all that, and you just have to remember that for unknown reasons Manitoba is MB.

Why Atlanta would ever get to be ALTA—as in Alta Vista, aqua alta, or Altamont, CA—and not ATLA, as in Atlantic City, or even as in—wait for it— Atlanta, GA I do not know, and I'm sure the OP doesn't either.
