I was fortuitous, just saw a great three part PBS series called "The Spice Trail"
It said that pepper was more valuable than gold at the time.

So the problem was with the grammatical structure of the question. If should have been phased as: "In Denmark, there are more _______ than people", as it is a comparison of quantitative totals within Denmark, as opposed to a comparison of anything versus the human population in Denmark.
