Let's look at this reasonably: If you don't have a brothel near your house now, you won't have it just because the laws have been dropped.

Just like any business, Indys and agencies want to find a place that will maximise traffic, so they will stay where they are right now. It's a sound business decision. Just because they CAN open anywhere, doesn't mean they will.

Please curtail your politics of fear.

I tend to agree that they will leave the current situation alone. They may not even bother with an appeal and go after criminalizing the act of paying for sex. Leave the SPs alone and go after the source of the demand.

What I am hearing leaves me to believe that if the SCC upholds this there will be a federal legislative response.

And personally, this will not change my voting choices either way on its own. I am not a one issue voter.

As much as I don't want to this ruling to be overturned, I think it would be idiotic to decide who I'm voting for, years in advanced based on one policy decision. Especially a decision which frankly isn't that important. Yeah, yeah, I care too, but compared to some of the other problems we have this is insignificant. Who I vote for is decided at election time based on the merits of my candidates and the policies of the party. Your poll is flawed.

I have never voted Conservative and Harper could sell blow jobs at Yonge and Bloor for 50 cents and I still would not vote for him.

I think the case will be appealed to bring clarity across the country. If not, there is the potential for appeal courts in other provinces to come down with different rulings. At that point, an appeal would be necessary anyway.

As for as the OP is concerned, although it would give me one less reason to vote for them, I would have to know what the other options were (in terms of overall policies and not just this issue) before I either vote for them or not. It is way too early to say how I will vote in the next election..

Agreed. Sorry, Fuji, but this is a silly poll. It ain't just the Conservatives who have been opposed to the liberalization of prostitution laws.

According to the Globe and Mail, here's the reaction from Premier Dad's government in Ontario:

The Ontario government is considering seeking leave to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada. Ontario Attorney General John Gerretsen said he does not agree with the position taken by Ontario’s top court, and plans to discuss the matter with his federal counterparts, because it is their law that has been called into question.

I don't mind voting on a single issue (I'm old enough to remember free trade) but I won't throw my vote away on a protest vote. If a mainstream party wants my vote on this issue, it has to commit to changes that legalize prostitution.

The votes aren't there for the Conservative Party in doing so, it might shore up the base, but that isn't a problem, it is more swing voters in Ontario who are the problem.
