Not so fast, the government has 30 days to appeal.

I think the laws remain in place until 30 days from now. Sorry to be a partypooper

Doesn't it actual say that the current status remains for 12 months, giving time for the government to rewrite the (now) illegal laws? There sounds like a way to go yet before we can call brothels "legal".

Sex work is legal, need to file taxes. Licensing will be happening. Organized brothels in 12 mos will be decided by Supreme Court.Cops can now be called on bad clients workers can hire security and phone employees and write of expenses. Police will need to cool there heels till new laws are in place.

You likely wont see legal brothels for at least another year (if not more).

But will cops keep busting incalls...etc, I doubt it.
Why would they bother if it looks like brothels will become legal soon anyways

Agreed on the police - it could get a hell of a mess if the courts are convicting girls and john's on something that has become legal since their arrest. It would be a waste of time!

Wow. Congrats to the appellants and the industry as a whole. The fight isn't totally over though if the government appeals to the SCOC.

As I read the NP coverage the Court has withheld implementation of the ruling for 12 months to allow the Cons to draft a new law(s). Speaking cynically I would not hold my breath for the Cons to prioritize this at all or even move on it until the absolute last moment 12 months hence and at that point in all likelihood they will simply file an appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada and delay the whole matter for another year or more.

I wonder what the over/under is that the government skips the appeal and just passes legislation to make prostitution illegal?

Unfortunately we have a Conservative majority government.... hate to throw cold water on the party, but their moral majority base will demand the law be rewritten.

cool this should bring the fees down Eh!!!!
Sure a few more SP's will join the business, but I suspect very few woman who considered being an escort have stayed on the sidelines due to concerns over the law.

Those following the "legal" brothel approach will be licensed and taxed as regular businesses now, which will drive cost up as they have largely not been reporting this income now.

You think SP's and agencies will eat the licensing and taxes?

I'm doubting it will effect the curent prices at all. The prices will just average out - any increase in price due to taxes will just drop as now its "more legal" to be in the business. More agencies, and more girls can enter into the business safely, decreasing the price, then adding tax on top = the same price as now.
