Yes. It is interesting, though, how much traction the IBM explanation has gained over the years; and how logical it sounds.
In fact the IBM origin is partially correct.

Clarke wanted to use a three-letter acronym BECAUSE of IBM and selected the letters HAL exactly because they were each shifted one from the IBM name. However, he needed to include a reason for the name in the story so he picked "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer" to fit the name he had already selected.

The Original question was :

What was the third leading cause of death in the USA 100 years ago?

The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. (____________________) 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke

nondescriptive gave the answer :
My response was :
Not Syphilis, it can easily be cured today with an over the counter medication.
Your response :
Actually, this is a completely false statement. But apparently that's acceptable in this thread.
If you would have read back a little, you would have seen that I meant that the answer that nondescriptive gave was not correct, and I was giving a hint that the not yet correctly answered question was diarrhea or dysentery was easily cured today with an over the counter medication ( like Imodium ) Not that Syphilis can be cured with over the counter medication.
