Valentine's Day is coming. And I want to make lobster spoons as an appetizer.

Any suggestions on where to buy fresh lobster in Toronto. I used to go to a place near the Summerhil LCBO but it has disappeared.

WG
Many many Chinese/Oriental supermarkets across GTA. Oceans is one of these.

If your in the east end there is Mac's lobsters on Warden. They supply make of the resturants in the city, including a few red lobster locations.

Thanks

Hey WG is this special treat for the same guy who is responsible for your problems in the other post?? If yes, you really are a forgiving sweetheart. I'd still be trying to dispose of the body.

From what I heard, Red Lobster restaurants get all their seafood delivered frozen from corporate head office. They do not serve fresh anything. RL is a re-heat and serve operation.

It's actually a 'girls night' for the dinner. A few of my friends went through nasty break ups recently so I thought I would plan a dinner party tonight. It will actually be a sleep over as well. So I see a late night in my future.

Happy Valentines Day.

I would not trust a supermarket for freshness, I travel to Halifax regularly. I go to St. Lawrence Market, see the lobster live and have them or you cook them. Dominic's is fine or the place across the isle.
Even when the lobsters are alive in a tank?

Any place that has a lobster tank has to move the inventory fast, or they will end up with dead lobsters. The suppliers that supply the sea food stores are in many cases also supplying the big supermarket chains. They can not afford to give bad seafood to anyone. Lobsters are are like cars, if the store has a large inventory and a big order coming they will reduce the prices to sell. On one occasion I was about to purchase a couple of lobsters when the price was $6.99 a lb. A guy changed the sign in the lobster tank to $6.99 a lobster. To move inventory they were willing to give up 1 1/4 lb to 1 1/2 lb. lobsters for the same price. People that came up later got the 1 lb lobsters or even some weighing less. I picked 2 of the larger livelier ones and asked the guy behind the counter to weigh them for me. The two lobster came up almost 3 lbs. BTW- Lobsters are best at that weight ( 1 to 1 1/4 lbs. maximum 1 1/2 lbs. )

This guy knows how to shop.

I agree about the weight/size. Big is not as tasty.

Now I really feel like lobster tonite. Too bad I already ordered a catered feast :p

If you get boiled lobsters from the store, make sure its not the dead ones they toss in the hot water.
Perhaps you can give me your definition of boiled....lol

I thought he meant to make sure they boiled lobsters from the tank that were alive before they met their untimely demise in a pot of hot water.

Every few hours a guy checks the lobster tank for dead or unresponsive lobsters. They put these lobsters in boiling water to cook them and sell it to you for the same price as the live ones. Like they are doing you a big favor.

Well I talked to the guy at Mac's lobsters and thats what he told me. Maybe you should go over to his place and call him a liar. But really, Red Lobster can't get all the seafood frozen.. What about their lobster tank? are those lobsters frozen too?

Thanks

I know one place close to Kensington Market, it is closer to Dundas St, on Augusta Ave. It is a BIG wholesaler of lobsters, you should go see even if you do not buy, big tanks full of them, quite a sight to me all sizes from small to giant, live as HELL. BTW, anyone know which size is the best tasting? Someone said the bigger ones taste better, like those 10 pounders?

I do believe that some wholesalers will allow the public to walk in and buy a few lobsters. As far as the 10 pounders go, you are getting 5 pounds of shell and need a sledge hammer to bust the lobster open.
