Pls try Inatei at Hwy & and Leslie. A little pricier, may be 10% more than Ichibun and other places but one of the best so far. The quality and the presentation is great and one of the best Hamachi belly and Shrimp tempura or lobster you can find in the city.

I think you're going to the wrong places Rubby. Most places, the meats are displayed in the front counter and they cut it right in front of you . You can tell the quality and cleanliness by the atmosphere of the restaurant and always pick the busy places with lots of customers which assure you they have good food and no left overs from the day before and such. Stay away from all you can eat places where the quality is crap.

Kaji.

Best in Toronto hands down. Just don't go there expecting rolls and shit like that. Kaji is hard core, traditional Japanese food.

Following that:

Blowfish - come out and see the beautiful people. I recommend the Ebi Shooter. It's great.

Following that:

Sushi Couture on Bloor, just east of Bathurst

Following that:

Hiro on King around Jarvis.

Edit to add:

I've read about Hashimoto being the complete sushi lover's paradise. Not only do they only serve I believe about 12 people per night, they serve you in some sort of traditional Japanese fashion. (Sorry, I forgot the name.) They are located in the Japanese Cultural Centre.

I have never been because it's priced at $300.00 per person which to me is just too over the top. (Unless it comes with a 95 pound Japanese geisha under the table performing oral sex on me between courses.)

My biggest concern with sushi is food safety.

I have had occasion to go behind the doors of three sushi restos and was simply grossed out by the sanitation and lax food safety when it comes to freshness.

How can one best find places that have really fresh product and are crazy about food safety?
i've had over hundreds of sushi meals and never grossed out or felt sick after any one of them *knocks wood*

I do feel like i've been hit by a truck everytime I have McDonald's or some other gross fast food

any sushi restaurant not using sushi grade fish would shut down within weeks... Its too easy to tell fish that's been recently cut and those not meant for sushi

I love sushi.

But I'm not so sure about your last statement.

I have been to some really shitty sushi restaurants around town - Sushi 2 Go for example. Fucking terrible.

Also, I cannot fathom how the words "All you can eat" and "Sushi" can be spoken in the same sentence, especially when the price is something idiotic like $15.95.

IM Fucking Possible.

Taro. Sheppard near Leslie. They supply fish to lots of restaurants but you can order fresh sushi and eat it at the counter. Or get takeout to impress your girlfriend.

Kaji by far is the best sushi place in town and probably one of the best in north America but its not cheap. Their set menus start at $80.
There's is also a little sushi place called Wow sushi on Charles west next to 7west. Give it a try, you'll be impressed.

I've been to $15 all you can eat to $50 order from the menu places and there doesn't seem to be a huge difference.

There's a place in Richmond Hill on Yonge north of Weldrick they were reasonable around $20+ and the presentation was nice. There's an article at the door saying the guy was a chef for Korean big wigs (can'\t remember who).

According to friends that have actually been to Japan, there are very few good Japanese restuarants in too to/gta.
We're sushi about freshness and were to far from the occean and we lack the variety Japan would have to offer.
Most Japanese restuarants in Canada are owned by Koreans or Chinese, few are actually Japanese owned.

Anyways, I would recommend mikado on laird.
