We arguing here for a day and we will a few days more about this shooting.
We have plenty of time to think he was right or not, or he had right to use his gun or not. The judge, the officers have lots of time to think about it too. The old guy had about 2-3 seconds to make the right decision.

The old man did the right thing. Kudos to him.

Amazing how anybody can actually find any fault with it. They're the kind of people that get robbed and murdered.

Killing the kid was not called for.

He could have just shot in the air and it would have scared the shit out of them.

He's guilty of manslaughter.
If I were on the jury, he would get a medal not jail time.

On the other hand I disagree with people carrying around guns for self defense.
Go live in a ghetto in Detroit for a few weeks. Travel. There is so much beyond the little safe cocoon you're accustomed to and take for granted. You'll change your mind.

Not in the United States, here in Canada probably. We are supposed to take it and die at the hands of three gutless punks.

In this case, they attacked and assaulted the 65 yr old victim, and as far as I am concerned he did the right thing. Defended himself as it states he has the right to do in their constitution.

Since the U.S. (notice I didn't say North America which includes Canada and half of Mexico) is such a litigious society, wouldn't be surprised if the families of the teens sue the old man for depriving their kids of the pleasure of beating him up.

If the teens were trying to rob the old man, then I am glad he shot them.
Yeah, if! For all we know, the guy rode his bike into them -- when they protested, he shot them.

The law of self-defence is reasonably clear to state (if not always to apply) - you can defend yourself with deadly force if a reasonable person in your shoes would think it necessary, but you mustn't hunt them down. Hunting them down is the same as murder /manslaughter.

There isn't anyone on here who can't see the difference.

But there really are people on here who, knowing the difference, want the law to be changed so you can hunt them down.

How ever did we become a civilized society?

In the US the law of self defense varies greatly from state to state.

And, there are people who want to have sex with children, shit on a canvass and call it art, etc. When these people are in the majority we will no longer be a civilized society!

Looking at the number of people on this thread who want the law to be changed to permit you to kill any punk whom you perceive to be attacking you, I'd guess they're in the majority already.

For those offering opinions on why he should have allowed the attack to progress and why it is not so outrageous to carry a gun on a walk through the park.... this happened in KITCHENER... ONTARIO! Two weeks ago!
I think you misread the date lol...December 31st of 2010 I believe it happened, it was huge news out here.

Justifiable homicide

"The man, whose name authorities withheld, will not be charged for shooting the teens because he acted in self-defense," said Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams, "the shootings were legal because the man was unable to escape, thought his life was in danger and had a permit to carry his pistol."

The man told investigators: "I was scared for my life. I was in big trouble. If I could have kept my bike on the trail, I would have gotten out of there."

"Johnson [the teen who was shot and killed] was on probation for previous offenses. Juvenile probation officers had gone to his Oakbrook residence earlier Wednesday and found the three teens playing video games. They told the two 15-year-olds to leave. The officers put an electronic monitoring device on Johnson's ankle, ordered him to stay home and report to their office with his parents at 4 p.m. Instead, the three met up and decided to jump and rob random victims. They first robbed an elderly man in West Reading shortly after 10 a.m., taking money from his pockets, then tried to rob another man in West Reading, kneeing him in the stomach and pushing him to the ground. . . ."

By the way the two 15 year-olds have been charged with assault and robbery.

You know why you had to pick an American city as your example? Because you can't find an equivalent in Canada, where we have more sensible attitudes towards firearms. When I was younger and working my way through school and such I have lived in what people would probably call a "ghetto" of Toronto and the "ghetto" of Vancouver. Never really felt unsafe there.

But you sure are right about Detroit. They go about shooting each other on a regular basis there, and if you are the only one not carrying a gun, it could be trouble. That is a problem. Of course, even if you HAVE a gun, you are a hell of a lot less safe there than if you were gun-less in Toronto in Parkdale, Malvern, or Jane & Finch areas.

By the way, how many firearms do you own? I own a couple of rifles. I own them because it's fun to shoot them. They are locked up in a safe, with trigger locks, and the ammunition is separately locked up elsewhere. They're certainly not set up for defense. The point I am making here is that I am not anti-gun in any way. But I am anti gun-violence, and against people carrying loaded guns around for personal defense(*).

(*) I make an exception for people who carry a Mare's Leg around in Northern Alberta, for bear defense.
