Although feeding the coyotes is not a wise idea, it also matters how this feeding is being done. Table scraps on the lawn - sort of mana from Heaven, is different from oh there you are coyote - here is this food I'm throwing out the door to you.

I agree with your line, Aardvark, but both actions will bring the coyotes back to the neighbourhood.

yeah, that is an animal doing animal things.

Weeeeeelllll! Not quit. Very few healthy animals will attack humans unprovoked (unthreatened) unless they are hungry, with young, or very territorial. I can only think of a handful that fit.

I do wonder if this may have been a younger coyote. Was it trying to play? If it didn't break the skin then it wasn't much of a bite. Don't get me wrong i know they can be dangerous. But these things living with us they're totally use to humans being around. I heard a story of a person out jogging one morning in hamilton. They looked down and there was a young fox running right beside them.

Still good idea to keep pets and kids indoors.:thumb:

On this we disagree. The only animals I've ever had charge me were a pair of draft horses in a coral spooked by a milk snake (you might consider them provoked though). Through various projects, I've spent an amazing amount of time within a stones throw of some of the worlds biggest baddest land animals in their house, not behind bars, and never been charged. My comfort levels in these situations are definitely increased by the knowledge that very close to me is someone with a big mother gun, so I'm no hero by any measure, and that does help with the fear factor and deescalates the situation.

Maybe if you stop trying to run them moose down with your rig you might feel different.

Eastern Coyotes and Red Foxes have very different temperments from my observation and also what I've read. Foxes, particularly those who have become accustomed to people when young are VERY curious we used to have one that would follow along 16 or 17 meters behind you while walking a dog if you turned around and walked towards him/her it would walk in front of you until you turned around again. It particularly liked medium sized breeds (presumably because it thought perhaps they were foxes?) Coyotes, particularly if there is more than one always seem to be checking to see if they can't make you a meal will sometimes stand their ground rather than running away etc. . .

i ain't saying all animals attack for no reason. just saying i have heard quite a few news stories of the family pet tearing a kids face off or other such shit like that. no matter how domesticated an animal is it is still an animal.

That also goes to different breeds have different temperments. A Labrador Retriever and children is a horse of a different color than a Dalmation or Husky with children.

Pets I can understand as they are often stressed and bred to within an inch of insantity. I've been bitten by three dogs in my life, but everyone of them can be explained and not just unprovoked; mistreated by previous owner, food nearby, and an unidentified guard dog. I've probably known three owners of cross bred wolf dogs who forgot their animal was half wolf.

thats all i was trying to say, even domesticated can attacked. 1 minute it's jumping and playing the next minute a kid is crying and bleeding. not saying they are all like that. having a pet wolf is just flat out asking for fucking trouble.

Wolves for pets is nuts. You should look up Shaun Ellis. I met him in Montana. The closest human who could ever be considered half wolf or it at least appears that way.

Coyotes are naturally shy and usually stay away from humans. That was probably why the Oakville one was shot. The authorities would want to know if it was rabid as where there's one there are usually more.
