So it seems like the Anaheim Ducks are ready to wave the white flag. There is a story beginning to circulate that the Ducks may be ready to part with some of their high priced talent.
I would love a late Christmas present of Ryan Getzlaf. I would trade a first rounder for him, would like to include cash, but the NHL has not quite joined the 21st century.
I will take Perry or Bobby Ryan as well/instead, but prefer Getzlaf.

MLSE ownership group should start pushing for contract purchases in the NHL.

Getzlaf would be the obvious perfect fit for the Leafs.....
The big and extremely talented first line centre that we have been waiting for what seem like forever....

I doubt it will happen....

It would be a very foolish move by Anaheim to move any of the three....They're just too talented and so young....
If Anaheim does pull a trade the asking price would be high....

Maybe Burke can pull another Kessel and trade two first rounder draft picks for Getzlaf....

There's some rumors floating around that Burke might being shopping Kadri. If it's true, then I could definitely see Anaheim being on the top of the list. But Getzlaf might be out of the question.

I heard the Ducks want to reduce payroll.
They are not, if the rumour is true, making change for the sake of making change. I think that puts Getzlaf in play ... for relatively cheap.

Just how are you wizards going to fit Getzlaf's salary into the Leafs payroll?

Finger being in the AHL his salary is already off the books...
His salary is still on the books, but does not count against the cap.

If all parties agreed and the Ducks were happy with a Leaf offer, whatever it would be, then it would happen.
Start with a first round draft pick ...

This thread is nothing but a Leaf fan wet dream.
Enjoy it while it lasts and then wake up and get back to reality.

A wet dream maybe, but in my humble opinion Getzlaf is doable economically speaking.

Dupuis & Orr on waives has freed up ~$2MM. They are currently $3.5MM under the cap. Grabovski has a $2.9MM salary and is a UFA after this season. This easily covers Getzlaf's $5.5MM. Throw in a first rounder & it's possible.
Go ahead & flame away I'm spending some time dreaming anyway :).

Throw in a first rounder? Isn't that how the Leafs buried themselves in past years?

I'm not convinced that Getzlaf for a 1st rounder + other picks would work out, especially if we assume that they lose Grabo in the process.
Phaneuf was a shining example of a single player making an impact, but in reality it doesn't always play out like that.

Why not go for a slumping center like Zajac (NJ) or Roy (BUF) where the risk is not as high? Set up a package for, say, Tim Connolly and a 2nd rounder. Much less risk.

You're wrong.

Ignoring the 1st round pick (no financial implications), if the Ducks and Leafs were to exchange Getzlaf for Grabovski today, Toronto would be $716,351 over the cap.

Tim Connolly has a Limited NTC.

Do you really think he'd waive it to return to Buffalo, or that the Sabres would even be interested?

Buffalo has shown alot of interest in Oshawa Generals center Scott Laughton these last few weeks. He's projected to be the third or fourth pick in the second round. I agree that Connolly is a longshot. Maybe Bozak? I don't know. But it wouldn't surprise me to see them try and manipulate Burke's willingness to offload picks.

A few points:

1/ Getzlaf is likely a more valuable asset now then Kessel was at the time of the trade.
2/ The Leafs are much better then the horrible team everybody knew they would be in 2009/2010 (except some Leaf fans and Burke) when the Kessel trade was done. That first rounder was likely going to be a top five pick. The first rounder this year would be closer to #12-18. That is an absolutely MASSIVE difference in value from a top five pick.

Using this year's first rounder (12-18th), is not that big of a chip towards getting an all star.

Intriguing.

The Mighty Ducks are awful. If they want to dump salary, then it's their top line. Don't think Cory Perry is on the block, so that leaves Getzlaf and Ryan.

If it is a salary dump, then Anaheim won't want salary going the other way, so that means prospects and draft choices. Since they are so bad, they will need some players now too.

Leafs should offer a defenseman, a forward, a prospect or draft choice, for Getzlaf.

Gunnarson, Franzen, Colbourne, Bozak, Frattin, Garborski, or a 1st rounder or some combination like that. If that is done, then start your own salary dump.

Scheen, Kadri, I don't think the Leafs should trade. They don't know what these players can do a couple of years from now. Getzlaf is a point a game player in his prime but an unrestricted free agent a couple years from now.
