Singapore: A passenger in Singapore Airlines flight is facing up to two years in jail, a fine
and a possible canning as punishment for allegedly groping a female flight attendant

According to the reports published in Straits Times, the 35-year-old Ukranian national,
Sierkov Sergii is accused of touching the breasts and buttocks of the flight attendant
on a Moscow-Singapore flight last month.

The reports said, a pre-trial conference has been scheduled in Singapore for Friday
and the man could be given a prison sentence, fined or caned if found guilty.

During the caning procedure, people are strapped to a wooden frame and lashed
across the bare buttocks with a long antiseptic-treated rattan stick.

As outdated as it is caning was a legal form punishment in the UK
until as recent as 20th century. Whipping of slaves was widespread
in the US until the 19th century. I believe a husband from the 19th
century in the US and UK has the legal right to inflict 'moderate'
physical punishment on his wife. So Singapore is still a backward
nation but not by a long shot.
