Ego and jealousy I guess.

I recall back in the early 1990's in Toronto this couple as casual aquaintances (I knew the woman's brother)...they both work at the same bank in managerial positions. They are married five years. She gets promoted to a vp position and he does not. A year later he divorces her because he couldn't handle the shame anymore that his wife had a higher ranking job in the company than he did. So, yeah, some guys have fragile egos when it comes to women outdoing them in rank or income or education. Me, hey, if my hypothetical wife was an MP or PM or judge or bank president, I say that makes me look good that she picks me to be with. But some guys just can't take it.

not to mention that it makes the potential divorce so much less scary

Well, I guess she got off lucky. Better than getting your eyes gouged out, your fingers amputated, your clitoris cut off, your vagina sewed shut, bucket of acid to the face, gasoline thrown over you and then set on fire, your credit cards canceled.......

What the heck gets into men like this? Instead of being proud of his wife he maims her!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...chops-wifes-fingers-stop-studying-degree.html
In such cultures: the man doesn't think for himself. From childhood, he's part of his family and his culture and his society and these things rule over him.

If i had to take a guess, this man was over time goaded by his relatives (note they were involved in this as per the article) who probably told him he's less of a man because his wife is "out there" (IMPLYING as if she's having sex when out of the house) and he needs to do something about it. And to prove his manhood, to prove he's still in charge.....he did.

In male dominated cultures, women are the vessels of family honor. And even suspicion of betraying that honor can be lethal.

Correct, a stupid culture that we should actively fight against.
Ummm...

There was a mass murder out west because some guy got dumped by his girlfriend. Happens here too. Perhaps not as common, but the fragile male ego is a common trait.

A significant percentage of women in Canada also get killed by their spouses (out of all of the women that are killed).

Granted, it's nowhere near as out of control as it is in other countries, but we're not blameless culturally speaking.

Also, here are the figure to back up my point: http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85-002-x/2011001/article/11561-eng.htm See charts 10 and 11 on the page for the specific details.

A culture supported by the Taliban, and Islamic Fundamentalist Extremists, perhaps orthodox Muslims, and affirmed by Sharia Law.

Is it the duty of Western society to rid of this cultural aspect?

How do we fight it?

Some won't change even if it's over their dead bodies.

It may still happen in our society or culture, but it isn't supported or endorsed by our society or culture which is the key difference.

I think it has more to do with belief and a sense of ownership than with ego and jealousy.
Yes, ego and jealosy by men in contemporary or Western society perhaps, and belief and ownership in those foreign cultures.

Most such crimes in the West involve murder - "I can't live without you," "you betrayed me," or something similar, very few are crimes involving maiming people "I'll teach you to write better than I."

For the family of the woman who is murdered this is probably immaterial, but from a sociological viewpoint it is significant.
