What is the whirring sound you hear at ATMs when you get money from the machine?
Answer :

The whirring sound you hear at an ATM is a recorded sound to reassure you that your money if forthcoming. The actual mechanism that counts and dispenses your money is several feet away from you.

I don't buy that. I've seen security guards filling up a machine before and it was right there inside of it.

This may be true of the ones you find in bowling alleys, but the ones at the banks ate quite big. and thick. A machine once ate my card and the lady manager had to go behind the machine to get it. The machine was several feet thick.

The one I saw was a genuine bank one. It was a while ago so it's possible they are redesigned, but all the machines make that noise and always have.
