Hi HI, I have a 2000 Focus with 265000 kms. I figured part of my problem was lack of driving. Yes, just about all my trips are short and the engine rarely gets to temperature.
I have solved your problem and underlined and bolded the reason your car has failed.

The solution is to buy a rebuilt engine.

This is one of my pet peeves.

As far as I'm concerned, if your car fails, you should be required to do whatever it takes to clean its emmissions up, regardless of how much it costs and regardless of whatever you tales of woe are.

Normally, I would agree with you, but I am spending a max of 10 bucks a month on gas, so how much am I polluting? When I start working again, I plan to junk it and buy a new one, until then it gets me A to B. Anyway, as others posters have implied/agreed with or how to circumvent the system, the whole thing is a joke. Are we in Greece? I am not the problem, I am sure if I drove my vehicle hard and hot I would have passed. As other have said, it works. It tells me the testing system is flawed.

Your place!!
My mechanice told me that the main thing to do before an emissions test it to make sure the car is warmed up, meaning taken for a long drive before the test. do not let it idle for any length of time before the test as this will carbon the engine up and effect the test. put a tank of premium gas through it before hand too. None of mine have ever failed, including a 1992 Jimmy with 560,000 km on it.

I do not see what a tank of premium gas is going to do for you. It has a higher octane rating, however, that won't make your engine run any cleaner.

Well, I'm amazed.... I passed the emmissions test!!! This is on a 2001 Dodge Dakota that has exhaust leak, no tune-up for I don't know how long, plus I'm overdue for an oil change. Here are my results of today compared to last test in 2007.
asm2525:
HCppm, Limit 50 Reading in 2007 was 2, for 2010 limit is 45 and reading is 0
co%, limit 0.28, reading 0.00 in 2007 ; for 2010 limit is 0.25, reading is 0.00
no ppm, limit 548, reading 1 in 2007 ; for 2010 limit is 473, reading is 0
curb idle:
HCppm, Limit 150 Reading in 2007 was 3, for 2010 limit is 150 and reading is 0
co%, limit 0.70, reading 0.00 in 2007 ; for 2010 limit is 0.70, reading is 0.00
no ppm, n/a in 2007 ; for 2010 n/a
Anyone willing to explain this?
The mechanic says...wow..you have a 0 emmission vehicle, how is that possible or did he screw up?
Anyway...got my sticker and the test was only $36.00... and further proves to me this is all a scam!
I'm with Tboy also.. that is one very clean test.

My dated understanding is you don’t necessarily have to spend the $450. If the car needs a valve job to correct the emissions problem, and that would cost $1000, then you are done. The garage can issue a conditional pass, or something like that. There is no requirement to spend the $450 to repair stuff that will make no difference to the outcome of the test.
KBear hit it on the nail.

Most likely it is your catalytic converter is the issue in most cases.

Go to crappy tire and ask the guy for a Universal Catalytic converter for you car. I believe they still sell the Magnaflow Universal cat's, get it installed and take a long ass drive to get this new cat nice and hot. Then take it back and get a 2nd E-test done for $15.00 bucks and you should be OK. If it still fails then you have bigger problems.

bring it to my garage. I'll just run a newer car on the system and say it was yours. problem solved... but I gotta charge the $36 or a case of beer.
Need an e test for 1988 , l thought you dont need an e test for car before 1990? How many years till it is exempt ?

There's this stuff too. No idea if it works, but they do claim to give 'double your money back'! I suspect it's just methanol or something...

Theres this liquid you can buy at Canadian Tire calle Guaranteed to Pass. You put it in your gas tank, fill it up, drive the tank off, refill the tank, and go get your test done.

Also, make sure your engine is hot. Take it for a spin, at ;least a 1/2 hour, to get the engine at normal operating temp.

Good luck!

get a p.o box north of barrie, change your address to that and skip the e-test altogether.

I had a 2000 ZTS, and it passed exceedingly well, even at 240,000 km. A friend has a 2002 ZTS with more than 400,000 km and it passed every time with flying colours. What is your point?

I know some people who do this, they save a lot on insurance too.

They should make the emission test province-wide or get rid of it altogether.

Shows what thinking does for you.... :). A quick look at the DriveClean website easily reveals that light-duty vehicles built in 1988 or later and are more than 7 years old require testing.
