Sorry to the OP. I'm not one to have pets but my dad kept two dogs at his shop when I was a kid, and we were fond of them.

Home pets are like family members, and I've seen how owners mourn their loss in equal fashion.

When mine died a few years ago I drove up to the cottage and dug a grave for her.

When my mother's cat died, I dug him a spot in her flowerbed.

I'm glad to see someone else feels the same as me. I wouldn't want GG2 to think 'I' was picking on him. Remember his gem in the raccoon threads.

To the OP, thoughts go out to you. I've had to deal with this on two occasions, but some time ago. The only time I got others involved my vet took care of it at no cost to me, having just helped putting pet down after suffering from serious cancer, with no chance of long term survival.

That sucks to find your friend that way. I hope he/she was an old beast anyway. I have lost 2 old buddies in my arms.... sucks at the time, but nice for them I guess.

I have cremated all of my dogs and they're all sprinkled together on a favorite spot near my cottage, overlooking Georgian Bay, where they have all played and swam. Nuts as it is, I go there often to visit... with my current beast. When my time comes, I wouldn't mind getting tossed out there too...

Sorry about your loss. My dog is old and not doing well and I think it's a matter of weeks (if not days) before that 'decision'. So I know how you're feeling.... :-(

Her vet does cremations - I think most do.

Losing a pet is hard. There is an emotional bond and it is hard when it is broken. Here is my advice. After a short mourning period, go to an animal shelter and find a new dog. There will be a void in your life that needs filling. You need a new dog and there are lots of dogs that need a good home. Get one. After my 16 year old cat died last year, I went to a shelter two weeks after her death and brought home the cat that is asleep beside me as I write this. Get another dog.
