I'm not black, but when I saw David Starkey's interview entitled: "Whites have become Black", it embarrassed me and took me back to when I was a young boy and had to put up with friends of my family, uncles, aunt's views that even then sickened me. Nabil better known as a comic does an excellent job in taking on Starkey's outdated racists comments...

Alexander the Great was Greek, in the sense that he was culturally Greek and spoke it as his native language (the ancient kingdom of Macedonia was clearly culturally Greek at this time, and must be distinguished from modern-day Macedonia, whose people are a mixture of the original Macedonian Greek population and Slavic-speaking peoples who migrated into that area).

As I've posted earlier, ancient Macedonians and modern-day Macedonians are not identical. The Ancient Macedonians were a Greek-speaking people (essentially, a tribe of Greeks) who lived in the kingdom of Macedonia (comprising of the modern nation of Macedonia and northern Greece).

Modern-day Macedonians are those who are from the modern-day nation of Macedonia and are descended from a mixture of the Ancient Macedonians and Slavic-speaking peoples who settled in that region, and speak a Slavic language, related to Bulgarian and more distantly to Serbo-Croatian.

Alexander the Great was an Ancient Macedonian by the above definition, and therefore was Greek.

Chinese civilization was as impressive as classical Greece, it just had less direct influence on Western European thought (religion, philosophy and science). The Summerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Medean, Egyptian and Assyrian civilizations all pre-dated ancient Greece. To the extent that ancient Greece was ever the "centre of the universe" (which is about as subjective a description as possible), Byzantine civilization postdated ancient Greece by almost a millenium and lasted about as long. Greek "decline" would arguably date from when Byzantium was sacked by the fourth (?) crusade in the 13th (?) century, not from the death of Socrates.

Also, nuts to your friends, Ptolemy was Macedonian, not Greek. Alexander the Great was Macedonian as were most of the powerful generals who divided up his empire after his death (Ptolemy, Antigonus, Selecus, etc.). Eumenes was the only one who was Greek. (I think). No Wiki search done, so I could be mistaken (but, of course, I doubt it...).

The anciant Macedonians, like the ancient Thracians, were Greek speaking peoples. For that matter, so were the anciant Bactrians (after conquest by Alexander). Language does not equal ethnicity or cultural identity. There is ample evidence that Greeks at the time of the Macedonian conquests did not consider Illyrians, Macedonians, Thracians etc. to be Greeks.

Yes, on this we agree. I even walked down to my local Greek social club (old Greek men telling war stories) and to a man they said Alex was Macedonian. In fact, some of the senior members of that club said they served under Alex.
