I laid down some black fabric weed preventer in my backyard in the Spring. However, I need to protect this fabric with some sort of covering on top.

Does anybody here have any experience with outdoor carpets or "artificial grass"?

You don't really need to protect black fabric weed preventer (landscaping fabric). It is meant to be wet and dirty.

The instruction sheet said to lay smooth stones, wood chips, etc. to protect the fabric, mainly from the destructive rays of the sun.

Depending on the size of space that you wish to protect, you might consider outdoor carpet from an RV store.

When RV campers pull into a site, they frequently throw down a poly-whatever carpet that protects the area around the RV stairs etc so that they track less dust and dirt into their RVs.
