Prepaid phone for both Canada and US?

Does anybody know of a prepaid phone company whose phones work both in the US and in Canada? I picked up a hobbying phone in the US (Tracfone), but it just plain didn't work for me in Canada. I'm okay with higher usage rates when across the border (either way, from the US->Canada or Canada->US). I just want to be able to use the same phone on either side of the border.

Any suggestions?

The Canadian cell phone market is much more heavily concentrated than in the US (i.e. more monopolistic): you basically have a choice of Bell, Telus or Rogers, or its subsidiaries (Virgin Mobile for Bell, Fido for Telus, Koodo for Rogers -- I may have the subsidiary relationship flipped for Fido and Koodo). There is a new player now in Canada with WIND, which I know relatively little about.

I know that all of the subsidiaries of Bell/Telus/Rogers that I've mentioned offer prepaid phones, and they should all work in the US (as their non-prepaid phones work there as well).

The reverse is generally not true (i.e. U.S. prepaid cell phones generally do not work in Canada).

That may well be true for reasons I have outlined earlier about the concentration of the cell phone market here in Canada. Thus my suggestion of getting a prepaid phone in Canada.
