For those of us who still read printed books (rather than Kindle and the like), what would you say is the most difficult book to open on the TTC?

My answer: The Book of Negroes, by Lawrence Hill.

I read it a few years ago when I was still taking transit to work. I was always worried that anyone who doesn't know what it's about would look at the cover and then punch me in the face.

On the non-fiction side, I got a few nasty glares a few years back when I was reading The God Delusion. No violence, but one guy sitting beside me was glaring into my face. I think he wanted to smite me.

Last week I was reading "Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk" by David Sedaris, an American humourist.

It looks like a childrens book with large type and illustrations but it's written for adults. The person beside me was probably thinking I was retarded.

I saw a hot woman reading "Sleeping Beauty" (the Ann Rice version) one time. I had a hard time not staring at her after seeing that.

Saw an attractive black woman reading that on the subway once. All I had to say to her, in a very solemn tone, was, "the first hunded pages were the hardest, weren't they?" She practically fell into my arms.

One with the pages 'stuck' together. LOL.

I enjoy reading the original Bond books and there is a chapter in 'Live And Let Die' called 'N*gger Heaven' about JB and Felix Leiter's trip to Harlem. Was reading it on the GO bus once and I have never skipped a page so quick, I'd kind of forgotten about the chapter heading. Different times in the 50's to be sure.

I lent a friend of mine a copy of Lolita and he got all kinds of strange looks and real attitude (from one person in particular) when he read it on the subway.

LOL. I'm just finishing Lolita today. I guess it's lucky I'm no longer using the TTC.

Probably US College hoops. I can take five, maybe ten bets from Yonge/Bloor or Spadina to the end of the line on a busy night of Hockey, triple that on a Sunday morning in NFL season, but you have to move between cars to get any action on College Basketball.

Mein Kampf gets you threatened with violence, and The Mammoth Book of Lesbian Erotica will either get you a girlfriend(if you are a woman) or it will get people cursing you and calling you disgusting.

I usually take little notice of what people are reading, unless they are attractive women. Threats of violence? For reading a book? Has anyone heard of minding their own business? The bigger issue on TTC is the revival of boomboxing. A defiant generation of young idiots blasting badly-tuned ditties full of swearing, violent imagery, racism, and mysogyny.
