you must be one of those terb celebs I keep hearing about on hyperdogs blogLooking at her pics I have to agree. I meant that my agreeing with her would cause a few of the limpies on this Board to quiver as my agreement wouldn't fit in with their preconcieved notion of me.

For some reason, the video doesn't play on my computer but your post backs up my version of the story.Yep CBC video here says the family found her car there and then kicked the door. 15 hours apparently.

No, you were not uncivil (this time). Yes, you were wrong (again). So, this time you are not as bad as those folks who are often (or always) both uncivil and wrong. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story/load of rubbish? ... oh wait, is that uncivil?

Michele Mandel's Column on page 5
Apparently, there has been another "honour killing". Shaher Bano Shahdady (21) found dead by her father. The person suspected responsible for her death is her husband Abdul Malik Rustrom (27)
All those who support the wearing of the burka should read Michele's column.
While it was his government that made it policy, it wasn't an idea unique to him. It had been around for ages and was already a widely accepted concept in Canada. It's also not a bad policy..Canada is only a Mosaic because ONE MAN made it government policy, Pierre Trudeau.
The Canadian Multiculturalism Act affirms the policy of the government to ensure that every Canadian receives equal treatment by the government which respects and celebrates diversity. The Act also:
recognizes Canada's multicultural heritage and that that heritage must be protected
recognizes Aboriginal rights
recognizes English and French remain the only official languages but that other languages may be used
recognizes equality rights regardless of colour, religion, etc.
recognizes minorities' rights to enjoy their cultures.[2
Uh, let me get this straight. You're talking about Islam, which is a totalitarian religion. Then you talk about it as a culture when it isn't. Then you say something sounds racist when no talk of race has been mentioned anywhere in this thread. Man, you're confused!Besides which.. Most people here aren't worried about multiple cultures.. They're worried about one culture (albeit with thousands of sub-cultures within it), and it would be the Islamic culture. If you ask me, that sounds racist..
Yes, this is the column in the Sun. So sad. The lady was only 21. All she wanted was to be free to do what Western women take for granted. This one?
TORONTO - Another honour killing in our midst and the silence is deafening.
Holy semantics batman.. Fine, I'll reword.. It is prejudiced to single out those that practice a specific "religion" and identify them as being "Non-Canadian" because of it.Uh, let me get this straight. You're talking about Islam, which is a totalitarian religion. Then you talk about it as a culture when it isn't. Then you say something sounds racist when no talk of race has been mentioned anywhere in this thread. Man, you're confused!
Racism is just plain stupid. Hating people because they look different is no different than hating people due to their height or shoe size.
However, being concerned about people because the values they hold and the violent way that they express them, even in a country that does not accept them, is not racist, culturist or religionist, if those are actually words. It is a rational response to their imperialist aggression that they can do whatever they want and everybody else must accept it because they believe it is the will of God.
Now if you don't mind, I want to stop typing and return back to checking out Persian Princess's gallery. At least this very unsexy thread has helped me add to my TDL.
Thank you for explaining it to avxl1003.Canada is only a Mosaic because ONE MAN made it government policy, Pierre Trudeau. It was not something that came from the people, it was something imposed on them as part of his internationalist ideology. Trudeau did not believe in nationalism of any kind, especially Quebec nationalism and used the "mosaic" and multiculturalism" as a means of stating to the Quebecois that they weren't special, just one of the many groups that populate Canada. It was the beginning of the end of any hope for Canada to develop a truly "Canadian" culture, like similar countries Australia or New Zealand. Now with free trade and the internationalizing of culture through media and the internet, Trudeaus's dream has come true and we are just a land mass, ruled by pathetic apologists, reflecting the cultures of over 200 OTHER countries, but no longer allowed to develop anything of our own lest it offend one of the myriad groups in the current mosaic.
Canada is a country not a religion. This is very dangerous thinking.. This was a situation where the cops were likely too damned lazy to do their jobs.. But you've quickly made this out to be a case of Canada vs Islam.. These people ARE Canadians..
The trouble most 2nd or 3rd generation Canadians have is understanding that Canada is not like the U.S. in that it is not a "melting pot", but rather it is a "mosaic" (multicultural). This means that by bringing their own cultures into Canada and keeping their cultural differences these Islamists ARE BEING Canadian. In Canada we believe it is more valuable to preserve many different cultures and learn to live in Harmony, than to force everybody to adopt little bits of other cultures and drop many aspects of their own.
Persian Princess, you have accepted and embraced both worlds easily and respectfully for all the right reasons. David Menzies knew what he was doing would cause a scene and that's why he was there to get fifteen minutes of fame he displays:As a muslim woman I find that this thread just makes me ANGRY!!!! Or should I say ANGIER!!! I choose not to wear hijab... When I am in Dubai visiting my family I do wear one... Not because it makes me a "better" muslim but beacuse it is easier.. I fit in and go unnoticed...In Dubai one has a choice to wear or not wear the hijab or burqa... I LOVE Canada because I have the freedom to be who I want to be...Please understand no where in the Quran does it say that women must cover (except in mosque). It says you must dress with humility... Having said that I am a firm believer of respecting the laws and values of the country I am in...If I go to Saudi Arabia or Iran I must cover SO I DO!!! There is no choice...If I don't want to veil I don't go to places that require me to do so, PLAIN AND SIMPLE...Here in Canada we have a mosaic that dosen't work... she has the right to wear a hijab, it is also the OP right to take a picture and not be assaulted for doing so... If she dosen't want her picture taken (because she fears it will take her soul my be taken away. A cultural belief Not a muslim belief!) stay home!! You sure as hell shouldn't be in a tourist area.... If you want to live here conform to this society.. If not GO BACK!!! We all have the right to our religions and our believes as long as they do NOT infringe on others... The OP was not being disrespectful of her and perhaps if she calmly went and explained her situation to him he would have also been kind enough to show her that his pics did not have her in them and if one did to delete it...
You're right HOF, it was his fault. We should have banned cameras in the square (including police cameras) because there was an Islamic event. Perhaps every non Muslim should have been cordoned off for a couple of blocks to make it more comfortable for them.Disrespect, Intolerance, Prejudism, Ignorance, Arrogance and Self-Righteousness under the guise of being somewhat of a reporter. He put himself and worse his child in danger as he knew there was an Islamic event happening in the area. Maybe someone should call the CAS for his poor decision making as a parent?
