Hi Guys,
Does anyone know about Post Exposure Prophylaxis or any physician who is experienced in PEP for non-occupational exposure to HIV?
See this article;
http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Postexposure_prophylaxis_a_flawed_HIV_safety_net-6778.aspx

I had unprotected sex with someone I do not know in a strip club. So, I guess the chances of HIV are very high.

I read about PEP and went to one of the hospitals listed here last night to get a prescription for it and I am on the prescribed ARVs. But the doctor there did not seem to be an expert on the subject.
I wanted to know if any of you had ever done it and if you can recommend a doctor who would be very experienced on it. Would like to have an experienced for counselling.

PMs welcome.

thanks
M

Not sure if they have experience with PEP but I imagine they'd be more knowledgeable than the doctors at a general hospital.

Keep in mind too...you're probably ok. Now, i'm not condoning bareback sex with sex workers, but it's not that easy for HIV to be transmitted either.

Actually, I'm not condoning bareback sex with anyone unless you know they're free and clear.......sex worker or not. I think it' s a common myth that sex workers are carriers of something. Sure, it's obvious they have sex a heck of a lot more than regular girls. But, I'd venture to guess that sex workers are usually VERY safe and in my experience, civilian girls are nowhere close.

I'm sure someone on here will post some medical advice soon but you really should go to the Hassle free clinic and talk to them, they are trained to deal with sexual health questions and will be able to answer the questions you have as well as provide your STD tests.

Do you know the person you had sex with is HIV+?
The stats in this Q&A are if the person you had sex with is HIV+, obviously the risk of transmission is much lower if you don't know if the person is HIV+.

You should start taking it within 72 hours or as soon as possible for best effect. You may experience side effects so take it easy in the next 2 -3 weeks while on the drugs. It is mostly heavy on the liver. Go to doctor right away if you feel ill. Follow up with check ups within 6 months to a year for HIV test and liver conditions. Don't have unprotected sex with anyone who is not your wife anymore.

Most likely your PEP is a combination of 3 drugs, including TRUVADA this is the heaviest one for the liver. IF you feel ill, and no time to see a doctor, keep taking other two drugs, but not TRUVADA.

BBFS is not safe, but sounds like you are suffering mostly from guilt and paranoia.
Over the last decade or so there was only one case of a stripper accused of being HIV positive (it was in the papers), and it was a big deal.
Transmission female to male rates are not that high for straight sex (unless you have a secondary infection that could be a point of entry for the virus)

You should go to the hassle free clinic and get the usual tests, you may have caught something else, but those may take a while to show up on tests. In the meantime don't screw anyone else.

By the way, I'm not an expert, but went through the same thing once.

thanks for the links and advice guys.
I am on Truvada and Kaletra. I am worried because the side effects are huge can really take a toll on me when really the chances of HIV are remote.
So, I was wondering if there is an experienced doctor who can advise me on all the follow-ups and regular checkups while I am on the drugs to ensure that the side effects go away once I stop the medication.

Never mind all that bullshit, which club, which girl, how much, and how was it?

BTW, what other handles do you use here?

^^Quoted for very sound advice.^^

I've never taken PEP but I know someone who has - it was a long, horrible treatment for her. She took the entire (30 days?) off of work to complete it. I'll PM you the info.

PEP is administered frequently through sexual assault support centers and the hospitals that work with them. Toronto Rape Crisis and the Sexual Assault Centre for Hamilton and Area both have phones lines open to men where you can call and ask. Alternatively, you can always call Telehealth anonymously... but perhaps the centres would have a better recommendation.

I don't know who you had sex with/why you consider them to be a high risk partner, but talk about it to someone at the HassleFree. There's a strong possibility you're worried over something extremely unlikely and, whether or not you decide to continue, knowing the facts might might you at ease a little more.

Thanks guys! I am young and in my early 30s with no history of liver or kidney problems. Was even on Creatine for a while with no kidney problems.
I just bought the prescription. It is expensive. Haven't seen any side effects yet.

@Becky, thanks. I have sent you a PM asking for more details.

Thanks
M

mcbfs2011 did you ever think that the stripper you had unprotected intercourse with was at the end of her shift, so you were number --- of the bareback brigade that day!

Being in your early 30's and considering yourself young, does not excuse the foolishness and immaturity exhibited by having bbfs with a stripper. If you hadn't done bbfs, you wouldn't have had need to purchase the expensive medication!

I've taken it 2 years ago - after a condom break. She was fingering herself and her sharp finger nail cut right through the condom, into my dick skin. I saw blood after I'm done, blood mixed with my cum woozing out of her pussy. it is the weirdest creampie ever seen. I was lucky she was clean and I caught nothing.

As for side effect of PEP, the first 2 days, I felt nothing. From day3 onward, I felt nausea and light headed all the time. Took it for 2 weeks, then I couldn't take it anymore. Again I was lucky I did not catch anything. Now whenever a girl puts her hand near her pussy I tell her to put the fucking hand away!

Are you guys for real?

You Bare backed a stripper and you figure she has has high chances of having HIV.
I had unprotected sex with someone I do not know in a strip club. So, I guess the chances of HIV are very high.
Make me laugh.

You have better odds of getting hit by a bus. Seriously. Get a reality grip.

BTW, Hassle Free is going to ask you:

1. Do you receive unprotected anal sex or share needles. If no, you should wait 2 years between tests - regardless.

2. How long since your last BB encounter. If less than 90 days, call us back in 90 days.

...You Bare backed a stripper and you figure she has has high chances of having HIV...
Never once did msbfs2011 say that he had had sex with a dancer. His words: 'I had unprotected sex with someone I do not know in a strip club. " could mean that he had sex with a man whom he did not know. That man could have been a patron or staff in a straight or gay strip club, or a dancer in a gay strip club. msbfs2011's chances of being exposed to HIV would be greater if he was a bottom, or if his partner was in a higher risk group, (ie: anonymous partner through glory hole in bathroom stall, intravenous drug user, etc). Everyone just assumed that there's a dancer out there doing BBFS, who might be HIV+.

For others, who are curious, it was a girl!

Take a browse through www.aidsmeds.com. It has a lot of good info on there. I don't suspect you became positive from this one time incident. It's much harder to pass it from female to male. My rule of thumb is that anybody I have the chance the bang, I assume she's HIV positive therefore I always wear a condom. An often used quote on the above website is "unprotected sex last's only moments but HIV is forever".

I was just going to ask it it WAS one of the ladies. Could have been another patron! You know how those boys get all horned up and it's awfully dark back there in the ol' VIP... :D

The risk is definitely nowhere near 'very high'. It's probably higher than you're comfortable with, though, which is what matters. Saying the risk is 'very high' is essentially implying that as a sex worker, she DEFINITELY has HIV and she probably even passed it onto you. That is just way too presumptuous and extreme.
Good post. The issue is the worry. The actual chance is low.
But id be careful about applying the logic that sexworkers in generalmhave a very low incidence of sti's. That is because most sexworkers habitually use condoms with clients. If you come accross one who doesnt, then risk is much higher, because a) she is exposing herself and b) the clients accepting this service are also ignorant/ dont care about their own health, and may seek out other bb providers.
Talk to a professional. If you are really worried, pep may be worth the side effects for your peace of mind.
