JACKSON, MISS.—Police in Mississippi say a woman opened fire on a puppy that had threatened children, but wound up shooting and killing her husband.

Witnesses told police that a pit bull named “Cocaine” had lunged at some children and tried to attack them on Friday. The dead man’s son says the children were taken inside and his father picked the dog up.

It was then that police say Betty Walker fired twice, hitting the dog once and her husband once in the chest.

Jackson police spokeswoman Colendula Green says the death of 53-year-old Robert Walker appears to have been accidental.

She says a county grand jury will decide whether to charge Betty Walker.

Animal control officers have taken the dog, and its owner could face charges.

So, she shoots the dog twice while her husband is holding the dog in his arms? Hmmm....makes me wonder if she was thinking of getting rid of both of them. What idiot shoots a dog (twice no less) while somebody is holding it against their chest?

Mississippi divorce?

While I support gun ownership by the populace, I also support mandatory firearms safety classes and perhaps an IQ test along with that.

alexmst, the IQ test and gun safety course can be combined:

At the conclusion of the gun safety training course have the instructor order everyone to put a round in the chamber, peer down the barrel, and pull the trigger.

That is just horrible :( Also she has to be one of the stupidest people alive!
Or just found a way to get off with Murder, in which case she's not so dumb.

I find it strange that this is not a full grown dog here, who will improper training, would attack smaller children, but they described this as a puppy... really wish the article said more about how old this puppy was.

I also find it interesting she fired at the dog AFTER the children were taken inside, out of danger.

The prosecution will hopefully ask such questions to determine whether accidental or not.

Nothing wrong with shooting a pit bull dog .. They all should be shot

That makes as much sense as saying she was American ..
She was a gun owner ... She was from Mississippi...
For sure it was not a good judgement call ..
But people make bad decisions when they are scared or mad
I would say she wanted to kill the dog ....
As for gun owners in the states ..
They can not believe we are not allowed to carry a gun .
A guy told me ... I do not even go to the store without mine
