Just to add some actual facts and decent statistics with some authority to this discussion, see here http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/85-002-x/2010002/article/11293-eng.pdf.

Conviction rates are interesting to look at... I see that many of us, based on 2008/2009 stats are spewing crap out of our mouths for Canada's conviction rates.

I note at the top of page 14 that 59% of all criminal cases result in the accused pleading guilty. From the bottom of page 13, 91% of cases are resolved with going to trial. Of all cases that went to trial, 61% had convictions and 39% were acquittal.

I also note that very charges as a percentage of the total result in actual acquittals. See Table 3 on page 28. Only 3.2% of criminal charges resulted in an acquittal. The vast majority of criminal charges that did not result in a finding of guilt were stayed or withdrawn (for whatever reason). That's 29.3% of all charges that were stayed or withdrawn. I assume that this is because the Crown did not think that the charge would stick or noted other problems with the charge.

Interesting...

For crimes against the person (i.e. violent crimes) I think that the best conviction rate info is in Chart 1 on page 7.

Anyone got any better sources of info?
Agreed. I'm basing this information from about ten years ago when I looked into it. You have to look at the violent crime stats and not the overall ones because who really cares about conviction rates on petty crime rates so much. It's murder, sexual assault, assault that you need to worry about. Stats about ten years ago were pretty low as per my original post and I am certain that there is a big disparity between US and CDN conviction rates on violent crime. I think some of the old statscan stuff from 2003/4 is still available which shows that and the US rates are at their DOJ site.

The average American is an utter moron. They are the world's most powerful nation because they can pull the wool over their citizens' eyes so damn easily. Not such sick pathetic fucks like Nancy Grace acting as a self-righteous judge, jury and executioner of Casey Anthony for the past three years either. Remember, these are the same idiots who bought the whole weapons of mass destruction BS fed by Bush et al eight years ago. These are the same idiots who blindly believed Obama when he said they killed the world's most wanted man and, instead of giving proof, dumped UBL's body into the sea in the dead of the night. So it is no surprise these idiots sit there and call for Casey Anthony's head on a platter. The state of Florida bit off more than it can chew trying to find justice to an utterly sick and heinous crime. Going for the death penalty against Casey was never going to work because there is no definitive proof as to how Caylee Anthony was killed or who did it. Yeah, they did a great job proving Caylee was murdered and most likely her body was stored in the car trunk and then dumped in the woods around the corner from her grandparents' house. But the state could not prove Casey murdered her daughter, put her in the trunk and then dumped the body.

I'm not saying Casey is innocent. I have no doubt she knows what happened to her daughter, but I don't think she actually killed Caylee. I think her father and brother and mother also know what happened to that little girl. What I would like to know is this: If my granddaughter (and I'm way too young to have grandkids. lol) were killed and dumped down the road from me, I would be moving away from that neighbourhood. I would not want to be reminded constantly that that was her final resting place. How come the Anthony family still lives in the same house three years later? Have you seen the overhead video of the family house? Immaculate lawns, perfectly working pool, etc? If I were fighting for my child's life and finding justice for my grandchild, the last thing on my mind would be doing the lawns or making sure the pool was in working order. Something is very fishy about that family.

Another thing, in one of the jailhouse videos where Casey is talking to her parents, she says, "I wasn't even supposed to take this." Take what? The blame? That was weird as hell too.

It is for these and many other reasons why I think Casey is not her daughter's killer, but does know the whole story.

and thus the concept of reasonable doubt.
