So, let me get this straight...

A man goes out to get rid of rodents on his property and he get charged and treated like a common criminal. What is wrong with this picture?

After just seeing on TV how the cops paraded him out to their car in handcuffs, I think this is a disgrace. And the way they described the mother raccoon and 'her baby raccoons' as if they were a 'family' living in the house???? A raccoon is not a furry, cuddly creature. If this were the case, we would all have them in our houses, sleeping on the couches, and taking them for walks. Giving them kisses, and cleaning out their litter boxes. To me they are nothing more than large over-sized rodents, and should be treated like the pests they are. What's next? We can't kill cockroaches, since they are just minding their own business in our houses?

This is another reason why we have too much cops in this city. When we make criminals out of ordinary people something is wrong. When 3 or more cars respond to this incident, arrest somebody in handcuffs, take him to court, waste a ton of money on lawyers, judges ,etc, then something to me is wrong, and we should start reducing the size of the force, so they can focus on real issues and stop criminalizing (sic) the residents of the city.

No wonder we will never get rid of those creatures. When we have a raccoon bite off a baby`s face (a human baby that is) then maybe we can start getting rid of them rather than listening to those bleeding heart animal right supporters out there.

I suspect that the charge is unconstitutional. Hunting is a provincial matter. The city of Toronto has no authority to pass any kind of hunting regulations. There are no provisions in the Ontario Municipal Act. Raccoons are however out of season at the moment. I can't see how a cruelty charge can stand up.

What really pisses me off is that asshole of a neighbour who dialed 911 (yes... that's right... 911). I wonder if a person having a heart attack had to wait 3 or 4 rings longer because this idiot decides he is going to use our emergency response resources to complain about a man attacking a rodent. What a moron. He should be charged. But as it stands, this poor man who was defending his property from these rodents will now face criminal charges and his life will be changed forever. What a disgrace!!!

that if it was your dog or cat in that man's garden. he would treat it no different than the way he treated the raccoons, right?

he's just apathetic to all kinds of living creatures. I highly doubt he would feel any more or any less for your dog or cat, than he did for the raccoon.

he just doesn't have any emotion whatsoever for anything that is living. he actually enjoyed hurting those animals, when he could've simply scared them off with a loud sound or something.

no wonder there are so many losers on terb. you all can't figure out how sociopaths think (they usually don't feel any remorse for hurting any living beings = man or animal). its very little wonder why most of you all can't figure out how women think. And your evidence that he enjoyed it is what? Just that you feel upset because raccoons are so cute and fuzzy?

Toronto Raccoons are not scared of loud noises, nothing short of a shovel deters them. I have constant problems with raccoons doing damage my business, breaking in and damaging things. I do not kill them, because I am not stupid, you can get in big trouble. But I would happily kill them if it were not so emotional for some people. That does not mean I enjoy it, or do not like dogs and cats, raccoons are vermin.

But there are lots of people in Toronto who think that cute, fuzzy animals are beings with rights, and their perspective should be respected also, even if we do not agree with it. So I do not kill the raccoons that plague my business, I spend more and more time trying to board them out, and I trap and release them when they get in. This is not practical, mostly I do it out of respect for the people who care about raccoons, people that include my employees and customers. In the past when we have had a raccoon inside, and then I tell them I caught it, some of my staff are deeply concerned that the raccoon was ok, and that I released it unharmed, so I do.

That being said, raccoon people should understand that not everyone shares their views, that raccoons are destructive vermin, and that dealing with them can be very frustrating. They should keep in mind that basically no raccoon dies of natural causes peacefully in their sleep, if they reach old age, then they either get run over, or killed by dogs, or starve. So if a few raccoons get beaten with shovels along the way, it just does not matter. As long as one person in Toronto is hungry, or mentally ill or abused, I just do not care what happens to raccoons.

There's one in every crowd! I hope a family of racoons takes up residence in your attic, bites you, and kills your cat. Then I want to see how much you love them.

I hate panhandlers outside my building - is it OK to punch them in the mouth because they disrupt the enjoyment of my residence? Of course not! Why is the attempted killing of a defenseless animal an appropriate course of action? There are other steps to take, geez! I am becoming more and more disgusted with what poses as humanity in Toronto.

A raccoon is no different than a mouse. I had mice in my attic... i put poison up in the attic to kill them. Should I now be charged as a criminal and have the welfare of me and my family put in jeopardy? I can't believe some of the shit I read on these boards.

Have a scrumptious slice of coon pie y'all


RACCOON PIE
1 raccoon
1 qt. water
1 pt. vinegar
1 tbsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 tbsp. brown sugar
1/4 oz. pickling spices
1 onion, diced
4 sm. potatoes
4 sm. carrots
1 recipe baking powder biscuits

Cut prepared raccoon in serving pieces. Mix water, vinegar, seasonings, sugar and spices together. Put raccoon pieces in this brine for 8 hours or more. Drain, put in stewing kettle and cover with water. Cook until meat is tender. Add onion, potatoes, and carrots. When all ingredients are tender, remove from broth. Thicken liquid with browned flour and butter and season to taste. Place meat and vegetables in a dish and cover with gravy. Cover the top with your own recipe for baking powder biscuits, with a little extra shortening in dough. Cut vent in dough. Bake at 450 degrees until brown, about 12-15 minutes. Serves 8.

The man was probably unwise in using a shovel to confront the animals but arresting a homeowner for disposing of pests on his private property is an excessive and highly disproportionate response.

The municipality should have just given him a warning about the dangers of fighting a raccoon (rabies ,etc.) and asked the property owner to use a professional exterminator to solve the pest problem.

I want to do the same thing to the raccoons pestering my deck. I got two cages. Caught several of them and released them far away. New ones come and leave droppings. I put down grounded peppers to keep them out. When the rain washes it away, they're back. The only thing stopping me from stabbing, beating, and poisoning these raccoons is the neighbors. I don't want to go with poison because that may kill animals that aren't causing any problems. What should I do?
They need to be conditioned to know that once they set foot on my deck they're in for a severe bone crushing beatdown. Those little bastards must think I'm a zoo keeper.

I bought a hammer that I was going to use specifically to beat them to death, but I fear the neighbors might catch on. I used to slaughter animals all the time as a kid out of curiosity more than anything else.
