This guy isn't getting elected again, for sure.
TORONTO—Premier Dalton McGuinty is defending an 8.5 per cent wage hike planned for the Ontario Provincial Police in 2014.
The Liberals have been having a tough time getting labour arbitrators to agree to freeze public sector wages for two years because the government never passed enabling legislation.
The 6,100 OPP officers received a five per cent wage hike this year in advance of the two-year wage freeze.
And because of a clause in their contract guaranteeing they will be the highest paid cops in Ontario, they will get 8.5 per cent in 2014.
McGuinty considers that a victory, saying he’s proud the officers agreed to the freeze, which is “what the government has been looking for.”
The premier says the OPP need to remain competitive with other police services, which is why they’ll get funding to cover the 8.5 per cent pay hike in 2014.
Toronto’s Police Services Board has complained wage hikes and benefits handed to the OPP has weakened municipalities’ bargaining position with police.
