the break where I surf
I was walking by the Yonge/Wellesley area today and I noticed that there were a lot of non-franchised independent businesses. I was in a rush but noticed a place called Papaya Hut. It looked pretty dingy. Has anyone tried out that place?

Actually I already have, but not for quite a few years. It had some delicious shakes, that was all I ever stopped in for, but google still shows positive reviews for it. I haven't stopped by but have walked past and you are right, it has started to show its age.

I believe there was an article either online or in one of the papers that said all the staff had worked there for the same owner for many years, and I believe that may contribute to a lack of upkeep on the premises.

In the 60's they were at Yonge and Elm. Across the road from Sam the record man. I used to work on Elm street and ate lunch there many times.

Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember it being near where Baton Rouge restaurant is now located, near the underground parking for the Eaton Centre.

I can vouch for them being in business back to the early 70's, senior high days. They must be doing something right.

I am 45 and have been going there since I was born. There use to be several locations (Eglinton w. of Bathurst, inside the Eaton Centre where the Starbucks is, the one at Yonge S. of Wellesley-used to be at Yonge/Elm and use to be one near Yong and King which closed in the 70's).

It believe it was originally owned by Carl's father who then sold it to him and his brother. About 6 years ago, I believe Carl may have sold part of it and then renamed it Papaya Island.

There is a curly brown-haired guy named Ozzy who has worked there for the past 25 years at least. He definately will be burried in that place.

Carl is slow but a nice guy but complains a lot. The chili is great with toast, the vegetable soup is great and the shakes and juicers can't be beat.

It is indeed an institution and whenver I am downtown, I can't drive buy without getting a drink - usually papaya mango mixed together.

I LOVE Papaya Hut (which is now called Papaya Island or something). It is dingy, kind of run down and the owner (Carl) who is also usually the guy who serves you and prepares everything can be quite the character! I was in there a few years ago and am guessing he was on the phone with one of his employees, who seemed be be running late and was making excuses. Carl slams down the phone and says, loudly, in front of me and a few others: 'that fucking cunt' LOL! Priceless. He's very nice, but takes forever to prepare anything. My favourite is the avocado sandwich (avocado, a sprouts/romaine/sweet peppers mix with tahini and hot sauce in a pita- yum!). Super healthy, and very, very good. I lived off those things when I worked at RM. As for shakes/smoothies, their most popular one is called Health Nut. High protein, frozen yoghurt, etc. Just remember that because it's made with frozen yoghurt that it is very high in sugar so I personally disagree a bit with the name, but I digress. They also have something called E3 Live, which is like wheatgrass (barf) but better for you and not nearly as repulsive. It's super healthy, gives you energy and is very easy for the body to absorb. It's derived from algae, or is algae or something. It's a crazy green colour so you know it must be good for you! I like taking it before going to the gym :)
Wow....that sounds crazy lol. Maybe they should have a special SP discount card

My friend went there and tried a smoothie the other day. I was told that it was good but obviously had tons of sugar and was given a huge upsell for some other stuff/drinks that sounded like nonsense. I don't think that I will be making a visit or spending any money at this place.
